Album Notes
The Hippos: Ariel Rechtshaid (vocals, guitar, synthesizer); Louis Castle (trumpet, background vocals); Rich Zahniser (trombone, Farfisa organ, keyboards, Moog synthesizer); Danny Rukasin (trombone); James Bairian (bass); Kyle Briggs (drums, percusssion).
Recorded at Mad Hatter, Silver Lake, California; Sound City, Van Nuys, California; The Complex, West Los Angeles, California; The Music Box & Chateau Chaumont, Hollywood, California.
A terrific pop/punk/ska band, the Hippos sound like a bunch of smart(ass) American college kids doing a first-rate impression of Madness, only with louder guitars and some deliberately cheesy sounding synths. The group's originals are mostly instantly memorable, particularly the hooky-to-the-max "Watch Your Back" (potentially a great summer single) and the gorgeously sung "Paulina." There's also a bracing cover of Burt Bachrach's "Always Something There to Remind Me," which, although falling somewhat short of the aching poignance of Sandie Shaw's original hit version, does serve to erase the painful memory of Naked Eyes's 1983 desecration. A very impressive debut, and in case you're wondering, the cover is a sly homage to the Animals's first LP.
