HAUNTED by Chuck Palahniuk

I am a big Palahniuk booster, but I thought this book fell a little bit short of the mark. It is comprised of poems and short stories by the various characters in the book with a first person narrative of events suturing the thing together. Some of the stories are outstanding and would stand well on their own, but their was little attempt to create any cohesion between a character and his/her words. What I mean is that any of the people in the book could have written any of the stories. Telling me that the Missing Link behaves a certain way is not as powerful as showing me. Also, the main plot, the backdrop, seems to lose steam about 1/3 of the way through, as though it was a chore for C.P. to keep up with it.
I can offer nothing as to the postlogue- the author picks up a little momentum while he is talking about himself and the drudgery is then passed on to the reader's shoulders. A simple list of people who fainted and in which towns would have been as entertaining.
I heard Palahniuk discussing this book on XM's "The Ron & Fez Show" and was stoked to read it. His fans are going to check it out because it is his. Those who aren't yet aquainted with him should also sample his work because he is a brilliant writer and has changed the face of modern fiction. Compared to earlier offerings it does pale a bit, but next to a lot of the swill spilling out of the publishing houses each year, it is "Decline of the West".
