The modern-day power trio known as Fastball has progressed leaps and bounds from their succinct fuzz guitar power pop days. The Austin natives certainly haven't lost their knack for crafting great compositions, but so many more textures and elements enter the picture on THE HARSH LIGHT OF DAY. From the honky-tonk piano sound of "You're An Ocean" to the bittersweet contrasting vocal harmonies and vintage electric piano voice used on "Goodbye," it's clear that Fastball has matured and gathered the courage to release the album that they've always wanted to make.
"Wind Me Up" sounds like an interpretive tribute to Elvis Costello, with a soundscape outro that might have you digging out your vinyl copy of SGT. PEPPER'S LONELY HEARTS CLUB BAND. Julian Raymond has stayed in the fold to produce THE HARSH LIGHT OF DAY while Miles Zuniga and Tony Scalzo continue their tradition of sharing lead vocal duties to great effect.

Editorial Reviews
6 out of 10 - ...[It's] a Great Album, which means 'ubersongcraft', which means the Beatles, and keep that pedigree coming...
Spin (10/01/2000)

3 stars out of 5 - ...[They] demonstrate their dexterity in delivering palatable pop with smooth Beatles/Badfinger-ish vocal harmonies, which nevertheless contain both edge and depth...
Q (10/01/2000)

...There are some terrific songs here. The propulsive 'Dark Street' pulls off that great pop trick of setting a despairing lyric to a catchy melody and conveys acomplex, ambivalent emotions...
Entertainment Weekly (09/24/2000)

...[They] simply remain a great band with great songs. An impressive new chapter to a dizzying success story.
CMJ (10/02/2000)
