Miserable and lonely, Harry is shocked when he receives a letter inviting him to attend the Hogwarts School for Witchcraft and Wizardry. At this special school, which is kept a secret from all those not involved in the worlds of magic, Harry begins to learn the truth about the death of his parents and discovers his own unbelievably amazing family history. This book is the first entry in the phenomenally popular Harry Potter series of books. Enjoyed by both children and adults, these books literally changed the face of children's publishing when, as a result of their stunning popularity, the New York Times began compiling and publishing a list of best-selling children's books--for the first time in that newspaper's history. Rescued from the outrageous neglect of his aunt and uncle, a young boy with a great destiny proves his worth while attending Hogwarts School for Witchraft and Wizardry. Rescued from the outrageous neglect of his aunt and uncle, a young boy with a great destiny proves his worth while attending Hogwarts School for Wizards and Witches.
Publisher's Note What did Harry Potter know about magic? He was stuck with the decidedly un-magical Dursleys, who hated him. He slept in a closet and ate their leftovers. But an owl messenger changes all that, with an invitation to attend the Hogwarts School for Wizards and Witches, where it turns out Harry is already famous.. . . Full color. Top Reviews Review created: 04/10/08(updated 04/10/08) by: 17 of 17 people found this review helpful. Like I have mentioned in other reviews, I grew up with Harry Potter and his friends. I read before these books were released, BUT this is the book that got me to really read--and read a lot. I am pretty sure everyone knows the story or at least the basics of the story, thanks to Hollywood, so I won't elaborate so much on that. But I will still send out my highest recommendations for the sole reason that this book taught me to enjoy reading! Review ID: 10000000006641036 Was this review helpful? Going off to school sounds like going on a field trip for more than one day. Wonderful characters you will never meet in any other book other than the harry potter books. Report this review Review created: 07/03/08 by: This book is an excellent example of how an author can create a whole new world with just with the written word. This book is in prime condition for a first edition book written by J. K. Rowling. This book is the first of a seven book series about a eleven year boy and he learns about his parents' world through his new found classmates at Hogwarts. Each book afterwards takes the reader to a new place and we read intently and watch Harry grow up and face difficult and challenging confrontations from Lord Voldemort. I highly recommend this book and the following books after this book to any reader who wants to be emerged into a new world containing wizards and witches. I've read the book before, so no surprises, but I'm glad to have it. The condition was just as promised and it was a great price for the book, too.
