In Harms Way

A black and white movie shot in 1965 that focuses on the direct
effect of the Pearl Harbor attack and the way it affected different
military lives. John Wayne ( They Were Expendable, Sands of Iwo
Jima, The Green Berets, The Longest Day, etc) and Kirk Douglas ( Seven
Days in May, Paths of Glory, The Vikings, Posse, etc) are the two
stars that most of the action is focused on. After the attack on
Pearl Harbor, the Americans make a failed counterstrike on the
Japanese fleet. Captain Torrey (Wayne) gets shore duty-due to an
injury, and finds love with a nurse (Patricia Neal) and also reconciles
with his son and then is sent back to sea to fight. A cog in all of
Torrey s plans seem to be Commander Eddington (Douglas) who has his own
way to seemingly stay in trouble. Remembering that Eddingtons wife was killed
in the Pearl Harbor attack, Torrey stands beside him through thick and
thin as Torrey advances in rank. The one part of this movie that is
a bit short is the final scenes where special effects show a battle with
a huge Japanese fleet. Even by 1965 standards-these scenes are not realistic.
Still director Otto Preminger (Exodus, Stalag 17, River of No Return, The
Hobbit, etc) does a great job molding all the stars (Paula Prentis, Burgess
Meredith, George Kennedy, Henry Fonda, Tom Tryon, Brandon de Wilde, Dana
Andrews, Slim Pickens, Larry Hagman--Just to name a few additional co-stars)
into a working movie. A great war classic with enough romance to keep
even drama devotees interested, will be enjoyed by most students of history
or World War II also. Will give most of these people a great night of
entertainment and will want to be watched again and again.
