Harman/kardon AVR 347 7.1 channel Receiver

Another great product from Harman/kardon. The receiver is rich and powerful in sound with great modern design features. I would recommend this product to everyone.

My home-theater setup is as follows;

- Sony PS3 connected to a Samsung LN40A650 via HDMI for video and to the AVR 347 via optical cable for digital audio.

- DirecTv HDR connected to Samsung LN40A650 via Component cable and to the AVR 347-Z VIA optical cable for digital audio.

- HKTS 18 5.1 home-theater speaker system connected to AVR 347-Z via cables supplied by Harmon/Kardon.

I won the AVR 347-Z receiver on an ebay auction and ordered the HKTS-18 speaker system directly from www.harmanaudio.com at a total cost of $918 (incl. shipping, cables and 2 rear HK speaker stands). The items arrived in a better than expected condition and on-time via UPS.

Maybe I was just fortunate, but my receiver looks brand spanking new. Once I was done connecting the equipment, the setup was easy and completely automated. The receiver automatically calibrated my speakers for the room acoustics, size, delay, crossover frequency etc. and believe me, it really makes a huge difference in sound quality.

I can say with absolute confidence that my home-theater system sounds better than a movie-theater. I am a movie junkie so I know. The sound output is free of distortion and the bass from the subwoofer fills the room without sounding boomy and cheap. This is the case regardless of the decible output. I watched the movie "Transformers" before setting up my receiver and home-theater system using just TV speakers and 2 Logitech desktop speakers for some sorround. But I was just blown away watching the same movie with sound output being done by the AVR 347-Z. The rotor-blades of the chopper heading into the military base sound like they're spinning 5 feet away from you. When the Camaro transforms to a new model in the tunnel, the music is just stunningly pleasing to the ears. There's so much audio detail people miss out on without a nice receiver and having experienced the difference first hand, I'd say not having a Harman Kardon receiver and a nice 5.1 speaker system in the house ought to be a FELONY offense!

I also like the fact that the receiver automatically selects the best-available surround sound mode for any signal received but the user can over-ride the setting and select a default mode if they like. Last but not the least, the looks of the receiver are stunning. It is just a beautiful piece of machinery and it gets noticed everytime I have a visitor.

This recevier was for a firend so i did not open an check it !
But when i did! I was very disapointed. It was well used and had many dents!
It was also very pooly paked for shipping. So this was not a good deal and i am very disapointed over the seller!

The Harmon Kardon AVR 347 is a very capable receiver that has plenty of inputs for multiple sources. The sound quality is excellent and the unit has a very nice exterior appearance.
This unit was the top of the line in their home theater receiver series but the unit has a few shortcomings. The unit does not decode hd audio( dolby hd, etc.) usually found on blu ray video.
Would like to see more hdmi inputs, only two available, three would be a better minimum.
It would also be nice to have two hdmi outputs. This is very useful for a living room that may have a smaller hd tv for everyday use but a rear projector with screen for movies in the same room. The unit does have 1 component output that can be used as a secondary output, but does not allow you to use the unit's on screen display if used.
Another useful feature missing would be a sound balancing program to adjust unnecessary sound increases usually found during commercials, which can be found on Denon receivers in the same price range and less.
I have found the unit fairly easy to install and the on screen display easy to follow. Speaker set up is simple with the set up microphone supplied with the unit. A real time saver. Manual is detailed enough, with plenty of information but can take time to fully understand for an average installer.
I did not experience compatability issues with any of my components that others have written in many product comments online and think most issues are associated with improper set up of the receiver settings and the settings within the components.
I have found Harmon Kardon receivers to be very reliable with excellent sound quality and would recommend this receiver, even without the items I personally think are shortcomings.

Very good buy, customer service and delivery is a little slow so give yourself some time when buying, in other words it's not a good choice if you need it by "now" but if you have the time it is a great choice.

It was listed to there expertations and it was what i was looking for. After buying it i was never more satisfied with a purchase as i with this one. I would highly recommend the manaufacture with no hesitation on this item.

I am completely satisfied. Clean powerful sound. Easy to hook up. On screen setting are helpful. I can rock the house now.

I got exactly what they said I would get. Everything in the box as if brand new. I have not hooked the equipment up as of yet so I can not tell you how it sounds or how easy it is to use.

Nice unit, and priced right - but Harman's customer service has really gone down hill. The unit arrived DOA, and it took over a week to get any response from HK to exchange it. Then I asked if they could cross ship it, charging my card until they received the defected unit back, no luck. In the end it took 6 weeks to get a working unit. PS Calling them just gave me a nice phone bill, as I sat on hold, at my cost for a long time.

Great unit, but terrible customer service these days..... They use to be great, I wonder if they have cut back in this area. And lets face it, these units are expensive and made in China (I'll bet it cost more to ship it than to build it there). I guess what I"m saying, once customer service is gone, the game is over!
