Hannibal (DVD, 2001, Special Edition; 2-Disc Set)

This movie has excellent plot, suspsense, characters, setting and so forth. The story line can be perceived in a few ways, so be sure to watch this movie a few times. Hay, this movie is worth the few bucks I bought it for on Ebay. If you are looking for some of those older movies that still are worth watching, then buy Hannibal today!

As a sequel to the excellent The Silence of the Lambs, this movie was disapointing. Julianne Moore just couldn't pull off the Clarice character like Jody Foster. The book is much better than the movie, and if you are interested to see what happens next, read the book instead.

This special edition of "Hannibal" comes with two discs. The standard commentaries, featurettes, deleted and alternate scenes, and stills. It’s two hours and eleven minutes long, and even if you’ve never seen “Silence of the Lambs,” the prequel, it’s surely a movie to keep you “on the edge of your seat.”

Hannibal gets a four out of five from me, and here’s why:

The good things: Anthony Hopkins is back. Do you need another reason? Joking aside, Hopkins continues to do an amazing role as Lecter, giving us the chills as he always does. Now he’s out of his cage, and who knows what he’ll do now.

Ridley Scott also does a wonderful job as director. The characters shine with emotion, and the scenes are shot with grace and careful planning.

Hans Zimmer has some creepy music set up for us in the movie, reminding us of how bad Lecter really is.

The screenplay is well written as well, if you like gore and disturbing images. You’re going to find a lot of that in “Hannibal,” more so than in “Silence of the Lambs.” It’s rated “R” for a reason.

Now the screenplay was well written up to the end, which is where we’ll go into:

The bad things: the ending of the movie I found controversial. No spoilers here, but I liked the ending they originally had, the one that Jodie Foster said needed to be changed before she would consider playing Agent Starling. Even after they changed it she couldn’t play the role because she was too busy with two other projects. Though I’m sure others will tell me I’m crazy for liking the original ending better (it was never shot), the ending Thomas Harris had for his novel, but it gave the story more substance that way. The way the movie ends makes the whole movie really have no point.

Julianne Moore was also a drawback. I really would have liked Jodie Foster to play Starling, and though Moore does a good job, it’s still not quite the same without her.

Again, the way the movie ended provided no reason for the story to exist. If the ending had been filmed the way the novel was written, despite the bigger controversy over it, I think it would have made the movie better.

Many of the deleted scenes worked for the movie and should have been left in.

“Hannibal” is still a good movie, and you can watch it without having seen “Silence of the Lambs,” but seeing the prequel makes it even more enjoyable. A great flick.

I am being very generous by giving this film 3 out of 5 stars. It was a bad sequel to The Silence of the Lambs. Which is one of the best suspense/horror films of all time. Anthony Hopkins tried his best in a poorly written movie. I also did not like the way they changed "Clarice's". I wish they would have brought back Jody Foster, she nailed that role. To be fair I will close with a few positve notes. Anthony Hopkins and Ray Liotta acted well. And it was filmed in beautiful locations, such as Italy and Florida. I strongly urge people to either rent this movie or purchase it, watch it, sell it. It's not worth keeping.

Hannibal is an excellent movie, as good as Silence of the Lambs. The only thing that keeps it from being better is the screenplay doesn't follow the book to the very end. It should have remained true to the way it was written. Anthony Hopkins is superb and Julianne Moore does a creditable job.

I watch movies for various reasons. One is for just entertainment no matter the realism. Silence of the lambs was great while Hannibal was more like a fictional horror story but still interesting to watch with excellent stars. Although events in some of the scenes probably would never happen it was fascinating to see how writer's minds work. I simply want this movie to add to an interesting series.

One of the silence of the lambs cont.. Should of kept Jodi Foster as Stalling, but still a real good movie. like to see all the movies in a box set sometime.

I cringe just thinking about some of these scenes. It doesn't live up to it's legendary predecessor in genius story but it sure drops more grotesque bombs and Lector details you wish you didn't know.

Hannibal is a pretty good movie. The story keeps you wondering what is going to happen the entire movie. Highly recommend.

I read the book before going to the opening day in the theatre. And the movie was everything I imagined and more. The music, setting, and Hopkins as Hannibal makes this my favorite movie of all times. Silence of the Lambs was a good movie, but Hannibal is a great sequel! It's amazing that you aactually start to like Hannibal as a person. Of course being a murderer/cannibal is wrong, but Anthony Hopkins plays the character so masterfully, that you wish the movie would last for hours, just to see him in that role. Nobody else should ever try to play the part of Hannibal Lector, it would just be wrong, kinda like Hannibal Rising, just wasn't the same.

Another chapter of Dr. Hannibal Lecters' dark shadow cast upon the Earth unveils itself slowly this time and paces itself as more elements and characters come into focus to fill in more of the story of the not so good doctors' life before and since The Silence OF The Lambs made him a worldwide sensation.

With excellent performances from Julianne Moore, Gary Oldman and Ray Liotta, Anthony Hopkins steals the show again as the derranged canibal he seems like he was born to play. Another academy award worthy screenplay by the master David Mamet, brings us a dark, disturbed and sometimes brutal film that is impossible to take your eyes off of.

The movie was more in line with silence of the lambs.It was well made but the story line left me hanging.I liked the actors and actresses.I wish I would have waited to buy the dvd used.It wasn't what I hoped it would be.I like movies that keep me watching.This movie I was able to take breaks.

this was the first item i ever bought on ebay/half.com ever an i was skeptical about if im getting ripped off but it came fast in like 1-2 days everything was perfect not a scratch on the disk nor the case evrything worked great i would buy from this seller again

without Jodie Foster from the original "Silence of the Lambs" this film is just a routine thriller. But still Anthony Hopkins is supberb, Julianne Moore is good as Foster's replacement in the role oe Clarece Starling, and Ray Liotta is ok. But the scene I found especially creepy is where Hopkins stir fry parts of Liotta's brain for Ms. Moore's dinner.

The sequel to the silence of the lambs is better for two reasons. Having Hannibal free and wonderfully acted by Anthony Hopkins and Julianne Moore being a better Clarice. I also like the locations they shot the movie since I'm very familiar with most of them. Gary Oldman does a great job as a defaced revenge searching former victim of Hannibal Lecter. The ending gives room for more. Personaly I would have liked it to be ended like the book.
