Album Notes Among the first productions at the then newly built Royal Opera House at Covent Garden, 'Alcina' is also one of Handel's most opulent creations, the third and last of his works based on Ariosto's epic poem of chivalry, "Orlando Furioso." The story is a serious farce of love and magic which takes place on the enchanted island of Alcina, a sorceress who lures men to her realm, seduces them and transforms them into animals, trees and rocks. Nearly every one of the characters is smitten with one of the others without always being sure which is which and, as in the operas of Mozart, confusion and jealousy give way to pathos and sympathy in the end. There is ample opportunity for beautiful singing in the seven principal roles, and those opportunities are not squandered by the stellar cast assembled here, with Renée Fleming in the title role, Susan Graham in the castrato part of Alcina's beloved, Ruggiero, and Natalie Dessay as Alcina's younger sister Morgana. The drama is given strong guidance by the hand of early music specialist William Christie and is well-recorded in a live performance at the Paris Opera.
Editorial Reviews ...Les Arts Florissants play with their customary elegance...the recitatives are skilfully placed throughout....this is the most intelligent and discriminating account of the opera so far, if not necessarily the liveliest. International Record Review (03/01/2000)
