A must have for any true aquarist, especially if you are interested in cichlids. Dr. Axelrod is one of the quintessential ichtyological minds of the last century.

Handbook of Tropical Aquarium Fishes by Herbert R. Axelrod, has been the definitive book on tropical fish since its first edition in the early 70's. The author, Herbert R. Axelrod is a icon in the field. I have an older version from 1976 and it was worth updating to a newer version. This book covers every aspect of tropical fish, how to set up an aquarium, selecting a tank, heating and lighting, filtration, and choosing suitable fish. My only regret is it is written like a school textbook.

I use this book to look up fish that I have seen in a store and online. It is handy to give my an idea of to care for the fish. It will breeading needs for many species of fish. It is an older book so some of it is out of date. I use the index to find the species name. It lists both the common and species name. This is a section in the front of the book that covers all the basics. I think that even an expert fish keeper could learn a thing of two from this book. I have had this book a long time and have not plans to sell it. It is still that good.
