This my favorite Hamlet just because it is over the top and vivid like all Zeferelli productions. This is Mel Gibson at his best although he is certainly not the ideal Shakespearian actor. He is, in real life, a Hamlet-like character. This comes out in his interpretation of Hamlet. The people around him (Glen Close, Ian Holm, Alan Bates, Paul Scofield) are giants in their field and Helena Bonham Carter is perfect for her part. The production values and authenticity are equal to any period piece I have ever seen. Let the critics thumb their ivory noses, this is lush, gritty and wonderful. The Bard of Avon would love it.

This is a cinematic Hamlet, Franco Zefirelli´s style. Stunning visuals: characters, scenery, wardrobe. I was more compelled into the character with Mel Gibson than the Branagh version, in which the famous monologue is said in whispering mode.

wrapped in clear plastic but is clearly a used CD. It was scratched, in fact. I didn't (and don't) want to communicate with a business that does "business" this way. Now I know--perhaps, you do too. If not, good luck.

Fantastic rendition of classic Shakespeare

Everything about it was perfect. The sets were breathtakingly realistic. The actors/actresses are theatre actors that carried it over to celluloid without a glitch. The costumes and hair styles are spectacularly and interesting. It took a couple of minutes to get used to the Olde English language, and we did rewind to the beginning again, so nothing was missed.
My 25 year old son wanted me to see it. So we purchased it and had a really nice time enjoying the film together. Of course he had to keep adding his take on things during the whole thing, and I had to watch it again, ALONE in order to truly enjoy it. :)

Mel Gibson does a FANTASTIC job in this film. He captures Hamlets grief and at times humor. I would recomend this to anyone with a Child who is studying Shakespeare. It follows the play as it was written and the actors are great.

To sleep, perchance to dream.This is when I first started taking Mel Gibson serious as an actor. Tremendous job, with intense almost sexual energy between he and Glenn Close. My biggest disappointment was the wooden acting of Helena Bonham-Carter, what a waste of the part of Ophelia!

Fun Hamlet
) I saw this film before I decided to own it -- while Zeffirelli certainly hasn't made the definitive Hamlet, Mel Gibson does a surprisingly good job of playing Hamlet, and the DVD is a nice zippy version of what some people think of as a long dark play.

Mel Gibson Hamlet DVDI chose the Mel Gibson Hamlet DVD because I knew my college students would be able to relate to a contemporary star, so that would make Shakespeare's most famous play more accessible. Gibson gives a passionate portrayal of the Prince of Denmark. The scenery, music, and actors all make this play come alive.
Since the four-hour play was reduced to two hours, of course, some of the scenes were either deleted or left out, but all in all, this was a great presentation. The DVD itself is good because, as with most DVDs, there are all those great "extras," for example, Gibson himself discussing his role as Hamlet.
I highly recommend this DVD to all interested parties. I am thrilled to say that after most of my students actually read Shakespeare's play, they could actively enjoy the Hollywood version. Gibson should have won an Oscar for this one. Anyone who wants to view the most-performed play of all ages should purchase this DVD. Become more cultured!
