  Shakespeare at his finest!!!
Review created: 05/07/09

I definitely wouldn't compare it to Romeo and Juliet, but Hamlet does have its charms. Ethan Hawke delivers an amazing performance. It gets pretty wierd sometimes, but you have to give it a chance. Shakespeare says so!!

I love it. I bought this item because I teach high school English and I enjoy getting my students to view various versions of Shakespeare's work. I add this DVD to my collection of three other versions of the play, Hamlet.

Hamlet (2001 DVD) Ethan Hawke Bill Murray
Review created: 06/04/07

I bought this because it was Hamlet done in modern dress/setting and stars Ethan Hawke, Bill Murray, Julia Stiles and most importantly, Liev Schrieber. Absolute fantastic cast, but it's a little hard to follow in some parts due to trying to match the Shakespearean dialogue with the current setting and action. I found this by accident while looking for Hamlet related items on eBay and was very glad to get it. Must have for fans of Leo DiCaprio's Romeo + Juliet or Shakespearean fans, directors or actors!

This is a good adaptation of Hamlet to modern times. The lines are the same but the setting is different. I bought it to use in an educational setting to contrast with the Mel Gibson Hamlet.

  Hamlet

Shakespeare intended his plays to be modified to fit modern times. This production of Hamlet is not only well acted but extremely well shot. Stunning cinematography and excellent directing set this particular edition of a classic apart from the rest. Truly an excellent modernization with unique elements that manage to both hold true to the original story as well as introduce new elements that will please anyone who sees this film, not just shakespeare fans.

Michael Almereyda's Hamlet: A daring attempt failed
Review created: 09/13/06
0 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This is a very poor attempt to reset Shakespeare's Hamlet to a modern-day, urban environment. The most obvious flaw in this film is that the Shakespearian dialogue violently conflicts with the new setting. For one example, the characters are forced to refer to a CEO as "king," which is sorely out of place for the context. Merely seeing a man in a $1000 three-piece-suit speak shakespearian english as naturally as if it was at his budget meeting is disorienting and distracting. On the posative side, the acting was sufficient, and the final duel scene between Laertes and Hamlet in act five sceene two is quite well transitioned to the new setting.

If you are looking for a quality film reproduction of Hamlet, I recomend Kenneth Branagh's version, and Mel Gibson's version.

Shakespeare: from page to stage to screen
Review created: 08/02/06

I teach a course on Shakespeare. In the last few semesters the class has evolved into how well Shakespeare has been 'interpreted' for modern cinema audiences. This version is a very well made interpretation of this classic play. It is interesting to compare it to Ken Branagh's cinematic epic version.
Most of my students understood this new interpretation and were entertained by the film.
