This game is why I bought the XBox. (Xbox360 Now)
If this game did not exist I would be happy with my PS2. (PS3 Now)

The Levels are put together very well.
The Best Part of this game though...
The Story.
It is paced well and intriguing.
The Vehicle Sequences are alot of Fun. Please let me Drive a Pelican for Halo3!!!
Warthog is a blast, The Scorpion Tank is too.
Covenant Stationary Guns, Ghost and Banshee are alot of Fun too.
Each Vehicle is different and alot of fun in its own way. No 2 Feel too much alike.
The Multiplayer is nice, but no Online.

The weapons are very Good. There is not a Ton of them, but the ones that are there are done well.

Human Weapons
Assault Rifle, Pistol, Sniper Rifle, ShotGun (My Favorite), Rocket Launcher.
Also there are Grenades.
Covenant Weapons
Plasma Rifle, Plama Pistol, Needler (Fun), Fuel Rod Gun
Plasma Grenades stick to Enemies!!! Oh my What Fun!!!

Co-Op is excellent. My Son and I played through Halo in Co-Op 4 Times.
There are not too many Games you will play 4 times through and Enjoy evertime.

  **Halo: Beginning Review **

When you get past all of the chatter about the potential of Halo looking better on a PC, and all of the yip-yap about Halo being "just another" first person shooter, and all of the lip-flapping about Halo not being able to compete with the very best games on PS2 or GameCube and you actually sit down and play the game on your Xbox...you're in for one hell of a game.

The only thing people need to be concerned about when it comes to Halo is how soon they're going to get it and where they're going to find the time to play. With a story good enough for a full length novel, audio and visual elements as detailed as any you've ever seen and excellent pacing, Halo is the reason for Xbox and vice versa. Bungie has brought to the Xbox the game that will prove hundreds of thousands of naysayers wrong (about the system and thegame) and bring sweet relief and joy to those who've been biting their nails and pacing in circles waiting for Microsoft's machine to arrive. Hype is one thing; reality is another; Halo on Xbox is one of the best things to happen in videogames.

Features:

* Situational First and Third Person perspectives.
* Role-based, cooperative multiplayer team game
* Play story mode as a single player or cooperatively with another player.
* Choose from a variety of conventional human and powerful alien weaponry
* Vehicles include marine jeeps and tanks to alien flyers and hovercrafts.
* Squad based combat.
* Enjoy the action with 5.1 Dolby Digital Surround Sound and Widescreen playback features.

The Story

Halo takes place in the far future where mankind is locked into a brutal war against a race of aliens known as the Covenant. These dudes are seriously evil. They wipe out entire planets at a time, and they are so fast at doing so that we poor humans are unable to get much information on them before they nuke us into oblivion.

The horde of aliens is getting closer and closer to Earth with the clock quickly ticking down before they completely annihilate our race. Finally the line is drawn. In a massive battle near a human planet, only one ship survives: Pillar of Autumn. The commander of the ship decides to lure the Covenant as far away from Earth as possible so she programs the ship's AI to jump to some random location in the opposite direction of the home system.

Eventually the ship arrives at a distant area or space where they find both a gas giant called Threshold and its small moon known as Basis. This wouldn't be so strange except for the fact that they find a giant ring construct floating between the two objects, which is about 10,000 miles in diameter. Unfortunately for the small ship, the entire Covenant battle fleet had followed them and arrived in the system shortly before.

When you boot up the game, you're knee deep in the middle of the Autumn being evacuated. That giant ring construct is Halo and the secret that it holds is the part of the story that will be up to you to discover.

Gameplay
Before we get into the nuts and bolts of how Halo plays, I'd like to share a few of the quotes blurted out in and around the IGN offices and other places as passers-by were enraptured by a glimpse of Bungie's first person superstar.

"Are those guys fighting with you?"

"Drive the Jeep! I wanna see the Jeep!"

"Damn, this feels like a movie!"

"I thought the fun part happened already."

"How come the enemies speak English?"

Lol it's pretty funny and entertaining.
Overall Rating- 10/10

Good but has room for improvement

More often than not, when a game is in development for more than three years, it does not live up to the hype. Bungie's Halo is the exception. Not only does it meet expectations, it greatly exceeds them. This sci-fi first-person shooter is a nearly perfect blend of gameplay, graphics, and sound.
The story revolves around the conflict between humans and an alien race known as the Covenant. The aliens have discovered a powerful artifact--on the ring-shaped planet called Halo--that will shift the balance of power, and it's up to the player to stop them. In addition to several first-person-shooter levels, the game offers numerous opportunities to engage in vehicular combat. Both the enemy and allied artificial intelligence are extremely impressive. Enemies will use the terrain and layout to put you in tight spots. Allies will know when to cover and aid you. For instance, if you hop into a jeep, an ally will know to jump in and man the turret on the back of it.

The graphics are exquisitely detailed, but only move at 30 frames per second rather than 60. The sound effects and voice acting are superb. The level design is among the best ever; most of the game is engaging and challenging without being frustrating. There's also high replay value thanks to the built-in single-player, cooperative, and deathmatch modes.

  GAME OF THE YEAR
Review created: 11/05/07(updated 11/05/07)
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

THE GAME THAT MADE THE XBOX! Without a doubt Halo played a large roll in the success of the Xbox game system and rightfully so. It was the game back in it's day and is STILL an awesome game to play. Sure, Halo 2 and Halo 3 have better graphics, more detailed maps, smoother gameplay, yada yada yada, but the original HALO was how it all started. If you got in on the Halo scene late and have never played 1 (not sure how that's possible, but hypothetically speaking) then GET IT NOW! You'll absolutely love it! IT IS A CLASSIC!

I played this at a friends house and bought a xbox and the game just to play it. Great story and a great FPS, and the multiplayer is awesome. Though i think this was a crowning achievement for xbox and halo has a lot of fans it is not the best first person shooter out there, but is at the top. Definitly worth a pick up.

When the original Xbox was released, there was a lot of doubt as to whether or not it would last against the Playstation 2. All of those doubts were removed when people started playing Halo: Combat Evolved. With an excellent single player campaign mode and the best multiplayer in as FPS to date, Halo made its mark on the video game industry and spawned one of the most anticipated sequels of all time. You can not go wrong buying this title.

Halo is the best first person shooter made so far, the graphics are great, sound is great, in between level movies great, voice acting great, and pretty much anything and everything in the game is great. I think the most remembered moment for me was connecting to Xbox live with three of my friends, and playing Capture the flag with 16 players on either side, and winning every game cause we would go as a group. if you are a single player though, the mission mode is great, and there is also a Co-Op mode and Versus mode for 1-4 players. this is recomended for any Xbox owner, As, "The Killer App for the Xbox"

Quite possibly one of the greatest games of our time!

3 of 7 people found this review helpful.

To tell you the truth, when I was waiting in line for over seven hours to get an Xbox when it was first released so long ago, I wasn't even planning on getting Halo. I had never heard of Halo and was chatting with a fellow gamer about the lack of multiplayer support in Airforce Delta Storm, when he mentioned "Well why don't you just get Halo, that's a good multiplayer game?" From then on, my life was changed. My eyes had been opened to the wondrous foreign world that Halo would provide me that would fuel my FPS rage for the next few years.

With that being said, let me proceed to introduce the game that needs no introduction. Halo has been acclaimed by more than one reputable gaming magazine to be one of the best shooters ever. Though we all know the story, I will use a few lines to explain it. You play the part of Master Chief, who wakes up from cryogenic storage to find that his starship is under attack from Covenant forces. The Covenant is a mixture of alien races that are bent on destroying mankind. As Master Chief, you are part a group of super human elite who have been trained since birth for military combat. Upon evacuation of the ship on a mysterious halo world, you proceed to kick Covenant butt as you try to find survivors and the secret of Halo.

Now with formality out of the way, I can explain to you the wonders of this game and why it is so great. To start out with, the graphics are absolutely wonderful. Normally when a system is launched you will find glitches and bugs in some of the earlier launch titles, but you find none in Halo. The plush environments almost come to life along with the spartan massive underground rooms you seem to find yourself in more than once. The sound is great, even though there is no custom soundtrack feature. You'll find that the background music fits the situation you're in, from upbeat combat to calm and cool sounds of nature.

The replay ability of this game is not much after you beat it on single player, however I gave it an "A" because of its superb multiplayer features. The game never ceases to be fun on multiplayer because you just have so many options to choose from. You can play straight out combat, capture the flag, etc. It's a wonderful experience. I only wish this could have been Xbox Live compatible, but since there was no Xbox Live when it was released, I guess I can't complain too much.

Last, but not least, the only minor complaint I had about the game was the learning curve. I gave it an "A-" because it takes you a bit to get used to the controls. I didn't give it lower because this could have been, for me at least, just because Xbox was a new console the day I played Halo for the first time and I could not have been used to the controls. Never the less, you eventually learn them by trial and error, and once you learn them, it is like riding a bike...it never goes away.

So to wrap things up, Halo is a MUST for almost everybody's collection. It is the pinnacle of the Xbox fleet and the second one is due out later this year. Plus, there was a price drop of Halo to $29.99 and also a Halo edition Xbox that came out for $169.99 which came with Halo, a nice green Xbox, and a controller w/special box. If you even wanted to get into more detail about the game, there is even a group of novels out about Halo as well as side story DVD's such as Red vs. Blue. I loved this game personally and it will always have a special place in my collection.

I LOVE (you must put proper emphasis on LOVE) this game. I've heard about it so many times and thought it was just hype. WOW, I've played many many games before and I have to say I really enjoyed this story line. The titles of the chapters were great too "The horse you rode in on", what a great sense of humor. If you ever thought that you might play video games some day, start with this game, you will be addicted.

THE SCOOP on HALO The No BS guide on what to expect.
Review created: 01/22/07(updated 02/06/08)
by:
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Halo is a popular first person shooter that supports both single and on line play.
This review concentrates mainly on the gameplay itself, so I will start by giving a VERY brief analysis of the non-important aspects, and why they do not matter:
Venue: Space/Scifi: Not important because it has no effect on game play. you still have gravity, air, etc. You are fighting on a ring-shaped world, but it is background decoration. Unless you look up, it's not even scenery.
Plot: You are a good guy, you take orders from a naked purple lady. Not important because: You don't have to know what you are doing. Shoot everything, and run around a lot, and you will get through just fine. The game is fairly linear, it will funnel you the way you need to go.

Beneath the veneer of plot and setting, the game is very well planned.
The gameplay is easy and natural, and translates well across the various platforms. The graphics are crisp and generally interesting. Apart from the "story" plot, the "tactical" plot moves smoothly and logically. Gameplay is easy to master, and you can select your own level of difficulty simply by adjusting your level of engagement. You will probably not die at all for some time, unless you like to "rambo" a lot.
The game wisely limits you to two main weapons, which enforces good logistical planning on the player. The weapons have a balanced trade off of capabilities and limitations, allowing you to adjust your loadout on the fly, to your situation and style of play.
The vehicles are easy to use, and very forgiving. You can drive very poorly and not kill yourself or your passenger. Aside from that, they move realistically and convincingly.
The tactical scenarios escalate by means of confined spaces, ambushes, increasing numbers of assailants, and eventually, respawns. The respawn areas are well thought out, and obviously intended to help pace the game, in which capacity, they are effective.
Other pacing devices include changing the enemies, which helps keep it fresh. In the beginning, your opponents include amusing MDK-style critters, but later your opponents get far more sinister. In this respect, the plot has some value, because it tells you why you are suddenly killing different beings, if that matters to you.

Downers:
The scenarios tend to be INCREDIBLY repetitious. Its like re visiting the same deathmatch arena time after time with different opponents. Or worse, the same ones. At one point when you are following the "guilty spark" (you'll know what I mean) he says "There are ten more doors" and you know, with a sinking feeling, that you have to repeat virtually the same set ten times. Sadly, you are not wrong. Still, if it were not for repetition, you would finish the game in about two afternoons, and that would not feel like your money's worth. Even so, older games like Unreal and Far Cry were able to create widely varied scenarios using a more limited component set than Halo had.
Overall, I liked the game very much, and would recommend it for an easy, fun shooter.
If you found this guide helpful, please hit the yes button before you go.
Thanks

  Halo: Combat Evolved (Xbox)

This is the best game for XBOX that I have came across(along with Halo 2). The graphics are great. The levels are great-you get to face the flood and the Covenant powers. The machines and artillery are just incredible-There's the
Ghost, the Banshee, the Warthog, and so many more that are just THE BEST EVER. Also the guns are great, the Rocket Launcher packs a devastating punch to the enemy, the pistol has a small scope, and my favorite is the Sniper Rifle which is (usually) a one hit(shot) K-O. Of course there are many, many more such as the Needler, the Plasma Rifle, and Plasma Gun which are also great and the Covenant use-so beware-Your opponents(mainly the flood and the Covenant) have great opponents-The Covenant has Hunters(Beware-aim for the orange), the grunts(really small and are easily frightened), and Elites(Taller and has forsfields around the to protect them from your fire-will eventually break through.
Good luck and I hope you found this helpful

In all fairness, we'd bought and solved Halo 2 before getting H:CE. We couldn't help comparing the two during game play. But, forgetting the awesome tweaks done for H2, H:CE is a great game with enough difficulty to keep it fun. The storyline is interesting with cut scenes that aren't so long as to be annoying. The final level is plenty hard enough to incite "vocal distress". ;) Overall this is a great game with decent re-playablity. Even for being an older title, H:CE gets two thumbs up.

Halo 1: The Best FPS I have ever played
Review created: 06/07/06
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Halo 1 has a great story, good graphics, and is a well balanced game. One can see the balance in the weapons, enemies, level design, difficulty settings, and pacing. The controls are simple enough to learn quickly and complicated enough to continually learn new stratagies. There is a variety of weapons and of enemies, but there are not so many of either as to get overly complicated or annoying. It is easy to know where one is in any level and difficult to get lost. The difficulty settings are perfectly set up. Legandary (the most difficult setting) is very challenging but rarely too difficult to be enjoyable (level 3). The perfect balance of Halo is difficult to find in most games that have been made recently which tend to be overly complicated. Even Halo's sequal was unable to match the perfection of the original.

Halo is as much a classic as Castlevania, Mario, Super Metriod, and Donkey Kong. Any Gamer who neglects to play this game is really missing out.

Halo: Combat Evolved really did evolve the first person shooter genre, and it will never be the same because of it

I am only giving this a 4 because Halo 2 is out, and after playing Halo2 for several hours and switching back to Halo you can tell the difference

Halo 2 is better but Halo: Combat Evovled started it all

You should at least play through the entire Halo 1 game before playing Halo2 just so you get more of the story

I spent over 100 hours playing Halo 1 and I do not regret it at all

and if you are really into it, there are books that are sweet, they give you a lot of action packed "back story"
