The hard-living, hard-loving country superstar George Jones has made no secret of his struggles to stay on the straight-and-narrow, nor of the abiding belief in God that has seen him through the many tough times. This 1990 release serves as a testament to Jones' Christian faith, 10 songs that speak of the redemptive power of Jesus Christ. This may not be his usual subject matter, but Jones imbues these inspirational numbers with enough of his trademark singing style that the collection can be enjoyed purely on its musical merits. Recorded by legendary country producer Billy Sherrill, who helped revive Jones' career in 1969, and backed by legendary vocal group the Jordanaires, the songs cover the range of contemporary country Gospel. There are cautionary tales like "(It's the Bible Against the Bottle) The Battle for Daddy's Soul" and "The Devil is Gathering Firewood"; and upbeat, honky tonk numbers like Tom T. Hall's "Me and Jesus" and "Swoop Down, Sweet Jesus." On the title track, Jones' bittersweet delivery is so compelling that it could almost inspire the listener to find his way to the nearest revival meeting.
