The Touch Pro takes a lot of visual style from the Touch, without sacrificing controls. One of the ways the it does this is by keeping most of its buttons hidden safely out of sight. The front panel looks like it has only a single main button, but in fact there are nine membrane-style controls there: a five way directional pad plus four navigation and control buttons.

The rest of the buttons are inside the slider, on the device's keyboard. I haven't been too wild about the quality of HTC's recent keyboards. The Touch Pro does a little better, but it's far from everything it could be. The buttons are a bit more convex, making them easier to find and push than the more totally flat style used previously. What hasn't changed is the annoyingly papery texture of the keys. Come on, guys, rubber isn't that hard to figure out. Samsung did it.

The keyboard's backlighting is a little weak, and shuts off too fast. Unfortunately there don't seem to be a setting to change this.

HTC Touch Pro vs. HTC MogulThere's also a few nice little touches, like the sliding keyboard overriding the device's tilt sensor. When the keyboard is open, no matter how you turn the thing, the screen stays aligned to the keyboard. Close it up, and you can go back to rotating the device from portrait to landscape by literally rotating it.

There's been some complaints about the Touch Pro being thick. I had the same first impression of it right up until I was able to compare it to similar devices. In fact, it's the same thickness as its predecessors, the HTC Mogul and the AT&T Tilt, but because it's a third of an inch narrower than the older devices -- combined with the ergonomics of the curving backplate -- it seems thicker in the hand than it actually is. While it's true that you're not going to get an iPhone-like thinness out of this, it's certainly no worse than any other keyboard-slider.

Features
The Pro comes in two important flavors: the GSM version, which is sold independent of a carrier as well as under the AT&T Fuze name, and the CDMA model, which is currently available on Sprint and Verizon. The Sprint version is what we're working with here today. They're more or less the same, other than some minor cosmetic differences (particularly in the keyboard design) and the fact that the Verizon model has 192 MB of RAM instead of the 288 MB on the others.

It may be that the Pro doesn't have every single thing you can pack into a smartphone, but if that's your goal, you can bloody well see it from here. A VGA (640 by 480 pixel) screen, 528 MHz processor, Wi-Fi (802.11b/g), Bluetooth 2.0/EDR, GPS, FM radio with RDS, 288 MB of RAM, TV out, 512 MB of flash storage, memory expansion up to 16 GB through the microSDHC slot...

TouchFLO 3DOne thing you don't often see on the spec sheet though, is the HTC customized software. But it very much bears mention. The new and improved TouchFLO 3D is light-years beyond the simplistic fingertip launcher that preceded it. TF3D is closer to a total conversion for the Windows Mobile Pro platform: virtually everything you need to do can be done from the rotating home screen, barely if ever touching the underlying OS.

Add to that the device coming pre-loaded with Opera Mobile for browsing, clients for YouTube, Facebook, and MySpace, a weather tab that's so pretty you could get mesmerized by a rainstorm, etcetera, and you get what I can only describe as a complete smartphone experience... and one where you could forget that you're running W

HTC Touch Pro, BEST CDMA Phone on the MARKET
Review created: 02/28/09
by:
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

okay, i won't go into detail posting those long boring specifications of the phone. i'm sure everyone who is reviewing or reading reviews know the specs by heart already.

first of all, the touch pro has 3 different versions in the US market.
One for Sprint
One for Verizon
One for ATT
Each one of them are different either by the looks or some hardware differences. For example, the Verizon Touch Pro has less ram than the Sprint one. Also the ATT touch pro (Fuze) looks different when compared to the ones on CDMA networks.

I'm going to talk about the sprint version. First of all, the original software that came with the phone may be buggy and slow. For those who complained about that, please visit ppcgeeks or xda forum for support, tweaks, hacks, and etc. They also have many many threads on programs and ways to improve/enhance your phone.

After unlocking the phone and putting on a custom rom that is built for speed, i can access touchflo3d at speeds never before. I recommend those to look into Mighty's rom. The phone boots up faster when reset or turned off. The theme/looks of the display also changed. There's more eyecandy but it does not slow down the phone.

By doing some minor upgrades, i can use the phone to the full functionality. I can use google search to map the nearest store/restaurant/gas station and i can quickly add those searches to my contacts without typing a single word. I can browse the web, watch videos on youtube. I can push email through gmail, and other email clients. I can text people using the qwerty keypad and send emails back to my friends/customers/family without a problem.

this phone is definitely worth upgrading to, if your on a non-window mobile phone or if your deciding between keeping the mogul or getting the pro. The touch pro's screen/display and touch feeling is much better then the mogul. With more ram on the device, i can do everything more efficiently when compared to the mogul that i previously had.

I can take pictures and upload them directly to facebook or email them to my friends. This is one of my favorite features, because i never miss the kodak moment of my life.

if you were deciding and looking for reviews, i hope you change your mind and purchase this phone after reading my review.

HTC Touch Pro = Great Windows Mobile Phone
Review created: 06/18/09

2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

The HTC Touch Pro is a great offering from the folks at HTC. This great PDA phone offers the ease of a touch screen with the full accessibility of a full qwerty keyboard (with a full number row). This phone comes equipped with Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional (upgradeable to 6.5 in the future), and comes with a great software package.

This phone is nicely sized at 4.17” X 2.05” X 0.70”. Some may say it is too thick, or brick like, but this phone is a nice change-up from previous Windows Mobile offerings. This phone does have some weight behind it, and you will notice it is in your pocket, being that it is 5.3 ounces. Reviewers have complained at the weight and size, but if you remember, it was less than 5 years ago we were carrying this sized, and weighted, iPods in our pockets. Being that this phone is a mobile computer, it is a small sacrifice to pay for convenience.

It comes with a 2.8-inch TFT-LCD flat touch-sensitive screen with 480x640 VGA resolution is a beautiful screen. Though it is a bit smaller than I would like, it is enough real estate to do the tasks that I need to complete on a daily basis. The screen has great response to know exactly where the user wants to touch the screen, and the exact link or program that you wan to use. Where this phone shines is watching streaming video, or video off a memory card. The video is clear, crisp, and smooth, and is perfect for day to day operations.

The phone is a little powerhouse with 512MB ROM and 288MB RAM, and with up to 8GB upgradeable memory through MicroSD expansion. I must recommend that you pick up an SD card to accommodate all programs that you may pick up for this phone. Also, this phone has built in WiFi 802.11 b/g, Bluetooth 2.0, Internal GPS, and the HTC USB expansion jack. One note about the GPS – you can purchase your own TomTom, or other, mobile program, to use on this phone’s internal GPS system. This is nice for those that choose not to use their carriers supplied GPS.

The keyboard, for those that prefer that over typing on a touch screen, is very easy to type on. The best part are the shortcuts that are on the keypad. You can access your texting, the web program, and email, without too much fuss. This keyboard is easy to use, even for those of us that have large thumbs and fingers. I will say that you will start to use this exclusively when you get used to this phone.

The call quality is great, with the internal antenna providing strong signal capability for clear calls. The earpiece is a little troublesome at times. If the phones volume is too loud, it will cause an echo that is annoying to the caller on the other end; too low, you can’t hear the person. The user must find that happy medium. The speaker phone is a great tool for business, or for hands free use. This is probably one of the best speaker phones I have operated.

Overall, I have been happy with this phone now for six months and have done many things to customize it to my tastes. I must recommend this phone to all power mobile users.

Pros:
-Bright, crisp screen
-Better sound
-Video capable
-Responsive touch screen
-Full Qwerty keyboard with number row
-HTC 3-D Touch Flow
-Upgradeable to Windows Mobile 6.5
-Expandable memory (up to 8GB on MicroSD)
-Great camera

Cons
-Windows Mobile gets sluggish when multi-tasking
-Limited internal space
-Sync port (proprietary), includes charging, headphone jack, and audio out all on the same port

I love that it is a touch screen and has a full slide out keyboard. It has a lot of applications and programs but once you spend a little time with it and the owners manual the actual operation of the phone becomes almost second nature. I'm glad I purchased it.

This phone is not very user friendly. Too many steps to do basic things. Battery is terrible but could be acceptable if the phone didn't freeze up so much. I used it for a day and then i was done!

It's like the i-phone, but better. The navigation is cool, but it takes some getting use to. The stylus is too easy to lose and should secure inside the phone better (I lost mine already).

Overall good phone, but HTC has room for improvement!
Review created: 09/24/09
by:

Overall good phone, but HTC has room for improvement! This phone has some great features. The LIVESearch program is AWESOME, Takes decent pictures, picks up WiFi pretty well, has a good stock weather program, and the slide out QWERTY keyboard is very useful. TouchFLO system works perfectly, though I've only had the phone for a short while, and I do hear that it wears out over time.

Where HTC needs to improve on this phone: The call quality isn't very good. Both the earpiece and speaker is average at best. Its hard to hear if there is ANY noise anywhere around you. Volume from lowest to highest isn't much difference. The battery life is TERRIBLE. I charge my phone every night when I go to bed, but about mid-day its already down to half power, and that's with just an occasional email check, a few texts, and a few phone calls. If I used the other apps, I could only imagine. If you buy this phone, purchase a spare battery or two and carry them around with you at all times. Only problem is that you'd have to find a cradle charger somewhere to charge them without having to keep taking the battery out of the phone to do so. The applications, especially web can be sluggish at times, and I find that it gets hung up on some apps for alot longer than it should. Also, the programs (or app) slider across the bottom is a great idea, but it seems like you should be able to change what programs you have in it and not be stuck with the standard stuff. The way the contact list is set up is kinda funny too, and it allows you to "pants dial" people with one click if you don't lock your phone EVERY time you finish doing something. That's kind of a pain.

But all in all, its a good PDA, and has so many features you probably won't, or can't, use them all. Good for business with the OUTLOOK folder easily accessible for email, etc. I would recommend it, but like I said, get yourself another battery or two, and a charger at every outlet in your house and in your car!

  Pretty Amazing!
Review created: 09/24/09
by:

there are many "GOOD" things about this phone, the fact that there is no speed dial, but rather it has its own tab of "favorites" which are the favorite places or ppl one calls is much more easier and useful. The picture quality is HD its very impressive. I love the fact that its a touch screen and all at once it can be tangible by pressing down on keys to text, by just sliding out the keyboard, which I find myself getting better at. The one thing I may be unimpressed about is the fact that it doesn't have an input for headphones...I mean If I were riding the bus I'd like to listen to my videos with ear buds, and not let the whole bus know what I'm looking or listening to. other than that I'm satisfied with this phone therefore I give it a "GOOD"

Not quite up to par with other smartphones.
Review created: 09/17/09
by:

Well I got this phone with high hopes since most reviews were glowing! I will not be one of those reviewers today however.

First off, windows mobile is sluggish and bloated, 6.5 makes it more sluggish but more finger friendly. Touch flow is really nice and has its uses, but I found that it just wasn't fast enough for my every day use(titanium or spb mobile shell are very good alternatives). Software aside though, most of the touch flow problems are fixed in later builds, and windows mobile is, well, windows fault it sucks, not htc's.

Htc however built a phone with horrible battery life, sluggish performance, a useless camera, and faulty keyboard design.

Also included for your near $300 bucks is a cheap looking and feeling shiny plastic body that is finger print prone. An near unusable 4-way button in the middle of an overall fat porker of an phone. Buttons at the button that were not even flush or level with the rest of the body(crooked lines with a large gaping hole on one side). A camera that is so slow to update and takes the worst pictures of any phone I have owned that I don't even bother with it.

Htc placed the power button and volume buttons on the screen portion and the sliding phone which makes it feel rather flimsy when you press them in and the screen wiggles around. It doesn't inspire a lot of confidence when you hold it and see the amount of slack it has just with normal use.

Now for the main reason I bought the phone! The really awesome keyboard that slides out! Well scratch that, it only took 2-3 weeks before I started to get double and triple presses out of one, then it became a string of lettersssssssss. And finally it gave out and never worked again. I tried hard resets, new roms, stock roms, I opened it and checked the cable to see if it was loose. Nothing. Now I have a HTC diamond with the extra girth and weight of a touch pro ;(...(oh and more ram, +1 point for that)

Just search around and you'll see frustrated people on their 5th and 6th touch pro's due to the faulty battery design that pops your keyboard cable out when the phone gets hot, which is quite often. Granted some have had no issues whats so ever in months of their use, I just feel you should know about it before you purchase.

Now the good stuff I do enjoy about this phone. Tons of customization available through third party software. Great call quality and not one single dropped call since I have switched to this phone. My old nokia dropped calls all the time! The screen is gorgeous at 480x640 but a tad bit to small, however very usable even with small fonts.

With all this said, I'm still tempted to buy the touch pro2, in hopes that HTC redeemed themselves with what could be the best windows mobile phone despite winmo being a bloated os.

Good luck with your purchase!
