HTC Sprint Touch: Best Windows Mobile 6 Phone
Review created: 01/24/08(updated 01/24/08)

One of the challenges faced by Windows Mobile 6 manufacturers (in particular, HTC, that dominates the market) is enhancing the user interface and increasing screen size--two key features that have made the iPhone popular.

The HTC Touch for Sprint does both and more. It gives users easy access to most smartphone functions by touching, tapping or swiping your finger on the TouchFlow screen. For example, one touch of your finger gets you to your email, check the weather, see what Mobile 6 apps are running, then select them and more. Because most of the Touch's real estate is the screen, like the iPhone, users have greater Web page and program visibility. This differs from Samsung's Blackjack and other mobile phones with a keypad. (Half of the phone is taken up with keys.)

That, naturally, is the biggest challenge today in mobile devices. Most manufacturers are integrating touch screen technology in their phones to compete with Apple. This challenges users to move from keypads to touch, difficult because most users still prefer controlling their mobile phones with keyboards. This accounts, in part, for Nokia's 40% share of the smartphone market and RIM's dominance with its BlackBerry's for email. I've yet to test a mobile device using pop-up QWERTY screen keyboards that beats physical keyboards. However, the Touch, offering several touch interfaces, plus handwriting recognition, comes close. Zoomboard, working only in portrait mode now, is an inexpensive software program providing a larger keypad, not as large as the iPhone's but useful.

Like the iPhone, the Touch let's you swipe your finger across and up-and-down on the screen, giving you immediate access to Sprint TV, On Demand, a handy information resource for news, weather, sports and other content. When updating content on the Touch, Sprint's EVDO network downloads info quickly, while the iPhone sucks air on AT&T's EDGE network.

HTC added voice control to the Touch, making it stand out head-over-heels against the competition. By holding down the camera key for a few seconds, users can place phone calls and open virtually any application within Windows Mobile 6. Using voice, you are only one step away from controlling bluetooth, accessing your calendar, to do list and notes or running other programs.

Add full synchronization with Microsoft Office, including Outlook, a decent 2mp camera with zoom and other controls, streaming video and a decent music player--and you're using a state-of-the-art Windows Mobile 6 touch screen device. When I reviewed phones on MarketingBeyond, my blog focusing on mobile technology, I rated the HTC Touch as the best example of an Google Android-enabled phone.

For Mac users, you're in luck. A company called Mark/Space sells a program called The Missing Sync. You can sync iCal, Address Book, Contacts and more on your Mac, using either a USB or Bluetooth connection, although Bluetooth synching didn't work when I tested the software.

Finally, one of the tests I always apply to a mobile phone is how it feels in your hand. The Touch is a half-inch shorter than the iPhone, but has a rubberized backing making it easy to hold. The iPhone is all metal, clumsy to hold and easily dropped.

2008 is going to be an important year for mobile phone development. The Open Handset Alliance and third-party programmers are hard at work, producing an explosion of innovative, functional--and fun--devices and applications. Until then, the HTC Touch is worth a look.

One of the best built Windows Mobile devices around!

I would give this phone an excellent rating, but only with a new ROM.

To star off with, this is one of the most resilient phones I have ever owned. I have dropped it several times even on concrete, and it still works great.

The screen is quite bright, the touch screen is very responsive. The phone features are well rounded and it gets good reception.

Here is some of the issues though.

The first thing you should do after getting this phone is look around for the leaked Sprint ROM 3.03.651.4. The ROM that comes on the phone has some issues. If you have no tech background you may have some issues, but if you got to ppcgeeks.com there are step by step instructions on how to flash the ROM.

The second thing you should do is to get an extended battery. The battery will last 3 to 4 hours max, and If you are spending the money to buy a powerhouse phone you want to be able to use it.

With the upgraded ROM you will get GPS, Sprint Navigation, EVDO internet speeds, and Windows Mobile 6.1 with threaded text messaging. After that the only other annoyance is the sluggish dialing on the phone pad. The two ways to fix that are to disable key tones, or install a keypad vibrator hack (also available at ppcgeeks.com). The other thing I really don't like is the placement of the camera button. If you are like me you will find that you are always pressing it on accident, and frustrated when thew camera comes on. I could go on forever, but here is the short of it...

Pros:
Rugged
Versatile
Great indoor/outdoor screen
When you upgrade the ROM you get GPS, EVDO, Sprint Nav and threaded SMS
Good Bluetooth connectivity

Cons:
Comes with a junk ROM
Battery life
Camera button placement

Over all I would recommend this phone to anyone who is comfortable doing a ROM update and wants an extremely versatile and well built phone. If you are not comfortable doing ROM work, you should probably shy away from most Windows Mobile devises as I have found them all to be lacking when first released.

Current Phones: PPC 6600 custom ROM, PPC 6700 Custom ROM, PPC 6800 Custom ROM, HTC Touch Custom ROM, and 1900 WM6

I purchased this phone about a week ago for my wife. She absolutely loves it. The HTC Touch has so many features and capabilities and the touch screen is great. There are so many things that this devise can do, so you really need to read the manual to take advantage of all it's features. This is not an Iphone or Instinct (which I own and love also) copy. This is just a good phone with a great touch screen.

I buy for proobe it, and sell it immediately impressed with the number of features available on this inexpensive phone. It has a 1M-pixel camera, video camera, and speakerphone. The NewPhone's size is perfect for carrying in a pocket and the battery has a pretty good lifespan of roughly 4 hours. My only complaint is that the menu system on the phone makes you click four times before you can find someone in the address book, set an alarm, or perform a additional functions. Other phones I've owned have simpler menus and get you to important features easily. Overall, I'd recommend the phone if you're on a budget

  HTC Touch

I was deciding between a Palm Centro and a Blackberry Pearl when this little number caught my eye. It took some time getting used to the touch keyboard but became pretty effortless after a week. I've not experienced any glitches with windows mobile as of yet. Overall it appears to process quickly. I really appreciate the decent size screen. The phone is working very well with my car's microsoft windows sync system. The menus on this phone are quite easy to navigate. I'm getting excellent reception on this phone at work, considering my co-workers are looking for a window while I'm perfectly fine (in my windowless office). The phone is also attractive, very sleek looking and can be easily carried in your pocket.

  Love my HTC Touch
Review created: 03/27/09

I love how the HTC Touch can be so small and have so much functionality. I have mine set up to automatically give me new emails, which is great. It is fairly quick at browsing the internet and is nice for looking up stuff. I used this phone after having used an older I-Phone and I like this phone much better. The HTC Touch is much easier to hold and handle than the I-phone. The only complain I have about it is that when text messaging, it gets behind sometimes and you have to slow down.

  HTC Touch Vogue
Review created: 12/22/08

Well I've had 3 of this same phone, And 2 of the 3 had Freeze up issues, I would pass up this phone to get a Touch Diamond. This phone has no Built-in wifi. Rate 7 out of 10. Phone can be Fully Flashed to Cricket with working internet and picture messaging. Nice phone but I would not pay over $120 for the phone here on ebay BOTTOM LINE!!!!

  Nice smartphone
Review created: 12/22/08
by:

This is my first smartphone; I bought it considering just having one device for PIM and phone. Alltel, if you have no subsidy from them, has unlimited data as a $9.99 add-on. Email and some excuse for the web (screen limited; revA is QUICK) seem worthwhile for now.

Everyone with GPS equipped phones seem to have some trouble getting them to work with a mapping application; there is much help on the web, but I've still not succeeded ... my problem, not the phone's.

I cannot think of a better way to manage menus, but this old guy, despite being very technically astute, remains confused about how to get back to where I was 5 minutes ago. Maybe the "old" is the problem?

I like it. Some things I'd like to have it doesn't have are 802.11 and a jack for real headphones, but I bought it knowing these were not there. The seller had replaced the standard battery and back with an extended 1400 mAH one; I can use it 2 days and still have 50% reported as remaining. Overall, I think that HTC did a very good job with this product.
