I bought this phone about 18 months ago and in general have really enjoyed it. Obvious selling points were the built-in wifi and integration of mp3 player, calendar, quad band phone and word processor.

The most important thing I can recommend is that you unlock your phone and move to a carrier other than the one that offers these handsets - you know who they are. While using a 'company-not-named' SIM my phone would crash at least weekly sometimes requiring a hard reset. Since unlocking the phone and switching carriers I've never lost my data and have only had the OS freeze a couple times (in well over a year).

My issues with this phone are:
- needs an integrated keyboard. The clip on is too bulky to carry around.
- needs a better processor. The current processor can't handle apps like Skype mobile, which should be a no brainer given the integrated wifi.
- needs more on-board memory. The 64MB storage and 64MB RAM are quickly consumed given the preinstalled (and permanent) applications.
- more reliable storage card recognition. Too frequently my phone is unable to recognize my storage card. This is an issue I not only use it for mp3s etc, but also to install apps given the limited amount of onboard memory mentioned above.
- ability to rotate the screen for a wider aspect. This would make the pdf viewer, word processor and browser much more useful as you would not need to scroll constantly.
- ability to tab through open applications from the Today screen. Having to 'close' each app before 'opening' another is a pain. There's no quick view that tells you the list of open apps at any give time.

Looking at the new phones on their way it looks like HP has taken a number of these issues to heart.

Please don't take my comments above as a knock on the phone. It is an early release and I have no regrets with my purchase.

Ipaq H6315, Lifes a breeze now!

The iPAQ h6315 Pocket PC from Hewlett-Packard (HP) is an all wireless and all everything PDA/phone. It is an international quad band GSM/GPRS model with built-in Wi-Fi for linking to wireless LANs and hotspots, and Bluetooth for connecting to a wireless headset or sending documents to a Bluetooth-equipped printer, and it has a built in camera, this thing is awesome.

The screen is a bright, clear 3.5-inch (240 x 320 pixels, 65,536 color) transflective LCD. That looks amazing. It is very easy to read even in the brightest conditons. The screen is also a touch screen, which makes it very easy to navigate around the menu systems.

The h6315 runs Windows Mobile 2003. It includes pocket versions of Outlook, Word, Excel and Internet Explorer and comes with 64MB SDRAM, 64MB Flash ROM and has an integrated SD card slot, so you can increase storage for your movie files, games and MP3's. The design is great. I like the well-labeled LEDs at the top of the front face beside the power button. They indicate the status of the GSM/GPRS, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi radios, blinking orange when not connected, green—or in the case of Bluetooth, blue—when working properly.

With the built-in Wi-Fi connectivity you can also browse the Web at high speed on a corporate or home WLAN connected to the Web, or at a hotspot. It worked well from the first time, connecting to my home wireless network was a breeze! Accessing pages designed for small screens was very zippy indeed. Accessing pages on the wider Web is naturally slower, and of course you'll have to use scroll bars to see everything on most pages.

The H6315 can also play MP3's and movies. This is an amazing feature. It comes with Windows media player 9, and it can play back all WMA files, WMV files and MP3 files like a charm. If you buy an additonal sd memory card you can store video and mp3 files on there. It makes out to be a great personal MP3 player while you are on the run, i also have an fm transmitter that i connect to the unit and i listen to my MP3's through my car stereo system. Movie play back is also outstanding!

The camera has the usual .3 megapixel (640x480 pixel) sensor and a lens that is fixed-focal length (i.e. no optical zoom) and fixed focus (pictures are never absolutely razor sharp). It also has no flash. These specs are fairly standard for camera phones, but they reduce the camera's utility to taking shots in favorable light that are good enough to use as memory aids or, in optimum conditions, to transmit visual information, such as the condition of a piece of broken-down machinery. The camera is of course also good for taking fun shots you can e-mail or send over the carrier's MMS (Multimedia Messaging Service).

The phone is very easy to use. It has an onscreen display that looks like a phoen keypad layout. you touch the screen to select your numbers, then hit dial. Very easy to use! the sound quality is great too. You can set any of your stores WMA files as your ringtone too! Sending text messages and MMS mesaages are a breeze too!

If your looking for a PDA with built in phone the h6315 is amazing! it can do everything you want it to do and more! What an amazing piece of equipment! I will never be able to live without mine now!

It works great when it works. But I need a pocket pc phone to work all the time. I like all it has to offer. But it needs to be fine tuned. Maybe i have a bad one.

I wanted a PDA phone because of it's applications. I am busy and I need a calendar with reminders. This phone's calender is great! The MP3 player is great. This phone is really easy to personalize which I loved! Sure it does need a soft reset sometimes, but that's technology for you. I've never had any major problems with this phone.

I like the large screen , the pc programs it offers, I like that everything is at a tap , instead having to go tru several steps to get what you want. I like having Access to work PC all the time. And that's why I purchased it.

  Ipaq 6315 and 6320
Review created: 07/06/06
by:
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

Both these models of HP's IPaq are excellent handheld computers. The 6315 has a camera in it and 6320 does not. One used mentioned having numerous problems with T-mobile sim card. I have never had any problems with t-mobile and I have used these units with them for about 3 years. If your unit is having multiple problems such as sim crashing constantly then the sim card may be defective. T-mobile will give you another for free. If you have difficulty using certain programs it maybe that the pocket pc version of software may not be truely compatible. Pay attention to any notes that come on the screen when you load the program. also make sure that you are using the correct version of software for you particular unit.

Your unit should not have any problems recognizing the storage cards either. If there is a problem then the card may be defective or damaged in some way.

I got my t-Mobile 6315 on a while back and have been using it on Cingular network for over a month now and absolutely loving it. Compare it to the Treo it works much better; you can actually pair your 6315 bluetooth connection to any headset devices out there. Infact, I have it paired to Jabra 200 and iTech headset at the same time for phone and MP3 easily. So far I rarely had to restart the device; may be once a week if I accidently open large media files or open shared folder that no longer exist (over WiFi). This was a BIG improvement over the old Treo650 which freeze up at least twice a day (espencially after sync). Synch with my laptop is a breeze especially when using Bluetooth; setting up bluetooth connection is a little awkward since you have to make sure it connects to the right COM port, ect... but once that's done... you're all set! I used it to transfer files and found that it much more reliable then the USB connection just as long as you don't answer the phone using bluetooth device, go figure!

Making phone call is as simple as enter a number and then send; it can also dial from your imported contact. Surfing online is a no brainer for this device and eventhought some larger page will not load properly; you can still read what ever info it already loaded; love my mobile google.

A few wish...
1. Win Mobile 2005
2. faster processor
3. more memory
4. more slot for CD card

I've check the 6515 and 700w before hand but decided against it; reason: NO WiFi

Oh! BTW, I also miss the sleeve expansion adaptor like the ones for 3955 I also own and will be up for sale soon.

The 6315 has good functions but be cautious of...
Review created: 05/21/06(updated 05/21/06)

Since I purchased the HP 6315 in August of 2005, I have marvelled at its basic functions (E.g., Word, Calendar, SMS, and WIFI), the 6315's ability to take care of my bankbook (Pocketmoney program), and the occasional spelling and grammar deficiencies (Oxford American Desk Dictionary and Thesaurus).

However, in hindsight, I found that there are two pertinent issues that also need to be addressed before making this Personal Digital Assistant (PDA) play an integral part in your everyday activities.

1) No local HP service centers

You should be armed with the knowledge that HP doesn't have any local service centers for it's iPAQ's. If a fortuitous event were to occur and lets say, you accidentally dropped the device and it got severely scratched or worst yet--damaged--it falls out of the warranty. Second, if it were to become faulty or defective, you would have to call HP customer service and explain your concerns to them. This discussion is then followed by the delivery of an empty box to your residence in order for you to send your unit for diagnostics which will set you back $50 (even if they were unable to determine any anomalies within your unit). The entire procedure would last a minimum of three weeks. Would you be willing to to wait this long?

2) On transferring data over two computers using HP 6315

If you are planning on transferring your calendar and notes over two computers, always remember to back up your data before doing so. If you were to load the HP 6315 with data and sync the aformentioned device with a new PC that has an non-configured Microsoft Outlook, your in for a big day/night as the handheld would assume the new PC's preferences and delete all the data you have transferred to the HP.

So be smart, take this review into consideration before purchasing your very own HP 6315.

This is my first PDA and its Great
Review created: 04/29/06

3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Its a great PDA for not so frequent users, as too many programs running same time hangs up and need soft reset, the phone is a bit bulky, side rubber buttons not so easy to use, but good for grip, detached Keyboard option is a pain (actually I never use it, instead use keyboard with stylus on screen). Also found the volume of the speaker phone is not so loud, you cannot hear phone conversation very clearly on speaker as you can do on motorola v600 or Razr- v3 phones (may be my IPAQ do not have good speaker).

Rest all function are really terrfic, if you really know how to make use of it, Well what more do you need PHONE + PDA + PC

I had one before and was working great... before was stolen. It's easy to customize and use. More than that.. with a memory card you have as much space as you want (hours and hours of music, pictures, even a whole movie). If someone want's a great PDA & phone, that's the one you should get.

What I like about the product is the ability to surf the regular internet like a computer, send and receive emails like a computer, use all microsoft office products, play MP3 and videos, games, take notes and translates them to text by transcribing the numbers or words. This also works with all the microsoft products preloaded on the unit. The camera is the only thing that does not work excellent. I give it a good rating.

  HP iPAQ Pocket PC H6315

This HP 6315 is a very useful and important piece of equipment. I love the fact that I can use it as a phone and a PDA, and also connect to the internet. It works great with great battery life. With a large memory card you can store tons of information on.
I used to have a plam life drive before, but I feel my switch to the HP IPAQ was worth it. I love the HP6315 far more than the palm lifedrive.
The only problem with this machine is that sometimes it freezes. It is not a major problem because it can be fixed with a soft reset. The startup time is very short.
Overall, this is a great machine and I highly recommend it.

I now have 3 of these phones for my employeys. i swithched over to cingular and unlocked these phones and I would never go back to tmobile. I love the fact that these phones are relativly inexpensive compared to the market. If my phone broke right now i would buy another one of these and unlock it.

I bought this PDA about year and half ago. I have it unlocked and used it with Cingular. I love the phone PDA and especially the Navigation. The only thing I don't like with this PDA the camera is not that great matter fact I don't even use it. The picture quality is so poor. The WiFi, Bluetooth, PDA, Navigation and Phone all are my favorite. Since then I have bought 2 more PDA’s for my family and love them.

If you want a phone that will allow you to put all of your eggs in one basket this is it. I have tried several phones and bought this unlocked 6315 and I finally feel that it is right for me.

However, because the phone is so big and the volume is so low, I had to buy the bluetooth head set and now it is fine.

The size of the phone is a blessing when trying to use it for a wordprocessor.

This phone is just the tool that you need in the office. Built-in Wifi makes it very easy to connect to the networks around you when you need to look things up online or just send an email. Bluetooth capability lets you work with a bluetooth dongle, or a bluetooth headset for professionalism in the work world. The phone is a bit big but it does an excellent job. Keep in mind this is a Windows operated phone, basically not your regular Samsung, meaning, its a little hard to use and maintain. Capibility for GPRS, Quad-Band, and so much more its hard to explain on here, if you think this phone is the phone for you, buy it! If you never used a smart phone or a windows based phone, this might not be your best option, but you need to start somewhere. Have fun with it =)

Very Good, But could use some refinement
Review created: 03/12/08

Love it except for a few small things. The screen doesn't lock while you are on a phone call, so your cheek / ear are constantly pushing buttons on the screen while you are in a conversation... this can kind-of get annoying. I wish the keyboard was built in, you could keep it snapped onto the bottom, but then the phone goes from being BIG in your pocket, to being ANNOYING in your pocket. The bluetooth powers off when you turn the phone off too, not a big problem for me though as I rarely use a bluetooth headset. Also, the camera takes very sub-average pictures (but i never use my camera for taking any important pictures anyway). Despite this, I love the phone. Reception is fantastic, LOVE the windows / outlook e-mail interface and there are T O N S of applications available for it.
