Gypsy Violin Basics
Definite beginners book, good CD with 3 tracks for almost each song. One of the song played through with a band, one of the melody line only played slowly and one of the background music only again played slowly for the student to play along with. Songs appear not to be authentic (my only complaint) but they are in Romany styles and teach the style techniques. A good foundation for later learning though the tunes themselves could have more interest. The second book in this series, Gypsy Violin, has authentic tunes and music much MUCH faster and more difficult but a sheer joy to attempt no matter what your level of proficiency, however it relies on techniques which are not named, or explained - super if you learn like me, by listening, but if you want the techniques written out the Basics book is for you. Together they make a great set of books that start out for definite beginners and move right through advanced playing.
