With BALDHEAD SLICK AND THE CLICK the former Gang Starr supremo quits his previous acid jazz experimentation for straight-ahead, back-to-the-roots rap. There's nothing experimental about this set--with its money-guns-hoes lyrical bent it's practically indistinguishable from others of its ilk, which probably guarantees its allure to hip-hop aficionados from Maine to Mexico. While the subject matter and execution hews closely to accepted gangsta formulas, there's no faulting Guru's production skills--he can practically turn this stuff out in his sleep. But while some of the cuts betray an asleep-at-the-wheel monotony, tracks such as the fatalistic "Never Ending Saga" and the street-smart yet politically savvy "The Revolutionist" are worth the price of admission. With nary an acid-jazz riff in sight, BALDHEAD SLICK AND THE CLICK signifies a determined step back to his roots for this visionary producer.
