A story dulled in the telling

This very provocative topic should have made an interesting book. Unfortunately, the book is written like a very long school term paper with nothing to bring it to life. The reader--who sounds stern and overbearing--doesn't help. No doubt this book was on the best seller lists. Doesn't anyone recognize good writing any more?
