A valuable reference for guitar work

This newest edition of Dan Erlewine's repair guide is an improvement over the last edition. One nice feature is the included DVD that shows you some of the techniques and gives useful tips on evaluating guitars. The book has good descriptions and illustrations when needed. Erlewine is good at finding tips to make tricky repairs easier. Overall, if you do work on guitars, even for fun, this book will describe pretty much any repair or adjustment you might need to make.

  Guitar Information Worth Having!
Review created: 03/06/08

This book is for anyone who simply wants to know more about guitars or how to set up and repair their own. Really takes the mystery out of proper set up answering the whys and hows. Has clear markings of skill sets to help you decide weather or not you could do a certain step of a repair or set up yourself. At the very least you will get a good idea of what will be done by someone you pay to do the work. Over all clear and quality information about acoustics and electrics. From general repairs-setup and even wiring and hot rodding(new pickups and wiring). I really feel I will be going to this book at least as long as continue picking up or at least look at my guitars. Highly Recommended.

Wish I'd bought this book SOONER!!!! Many Answers!!!!
Review created: 09/02/09

Answers questions I have, answers questions I didn't even know I was going to need to ask! I've been refinishing, rebuilding guitars as a hobby, actually DO make a little money. Everything I've learned so far has been from internet search and trial and error. NOW, I have a go-to reference to supplement any questions or repair techniques. Will greatly improve my confidence in my ability to do repairs/refinishing/wiring. Gonna get better and better. Good book, wise purchase for any guitarist that wants to know how to do MORE than just change strings and polish guitar. Teaches you how to do your own "set-ups", too. I learned how from the 'net, but can always use more info!

  good book

it has a lot of specific info on repair, from repairing and replacing the nut to fret jobs and repairing chips in the finish. not as many photos and illistrations to go with the instruction as the second edition. but over all its a good book. i would recomend getting both even though there is alot of the same info in each.

Font changed from the last edition
Review created: 06/17/08

From serif to a sans-serif. A total eye-strain.
Helvetica is perfect for the web or on screen reading, not for a book, specially at the tiny size used in this book. I recommend the previous edition, as is readable (serif font). Very few things changed anyway..

  I've enjoyed this book!

This is a good book for all do-it-yourself craftspeople. It goes through basics like proper stringing, to re-aligning the neck, and even repairing finishes.

One thing that disappointed me, was that there wasn't a section on Set-in Electric guitar necks, but I'm happy despite it.

This is a good book if you like to working with your hands, and have plenty of patience.
