GAMEPLAY: 9/10
This game has some quality gameplay, but it could have been a tad better. Just a tad. The gameplay is not so quite... original. It has its own "flare", but it has the same way to incorporate sounds. What you must do is hit 1, 2, or 3 of 5 colored buttons to make the sounds of the guitar, this is NOT original, but it does have its own incorporation. For insatnce, the moving guitar handle and how the buttons you must press are specified in to a certain order. I also like the camera views that you (good luck trying this, Guitar Hero) or viewers can watch. I like the camera view of the one that has a camera right on the guitar's head.
There are four difficulties: Easy (for wimps and those truly are horrible at guitar), medium (those that have some skill, but cannot do those fast repetitive button pressing. For this, I say, do some finger excercises, man!), hard (those are good, but they are progressing through those hard to do songs), and expert (anyone that do ALL of the expert songs, are truly "Guitar Heros). These songs are incredibly difficult. Good Luck!

SONGS: 10/10
Though I cannot play story mode on hard or expert (yes I am a horrible Guitar Hero), I do know someone who can. The songs are very good and most are not as well known as those that made world hits. From Guns 'n' Roses to Lynnard Skinard, these songs are fascinating and sometimes challenging. I'm not sure about you, but to me, "Hanger 18" is the hardest to play song on Expert. You might have your own picks, but that is mine. There are of course songs that non-famous artists made, so you can believe there is originallity in this game, noetheless talent in the world. Maybe you can send in a tape of your best ceated song to Harmonix.

Sound: 10/10
Perfect. That is the only way I can describe the sound og Guitar Hero II. you can tell when the whammy bar is being hit. It has its distinct, real life sounding sound. Man, I love the whammy bar.
The songs have a awesome clarity of sound. You can actually hear the crowd cherring, the bass is just amazing, the singing is clear, not scratchy, and the drums are singlefied and clear. If you have an HD television, the sound is ten times better.

I highly reccomend buying this game, not just renting. If you buy it and find that you aren't that good at guitar, there is always (I don't want to sound cliche) practice makes perfect. My cousin practiced so much that he became INCREDIBLY good at Guitar Hero and Guitar Hero II. Yet he still can't beat "Hanger 18". So, think about this game on a wish list or just leave right now to buy it.

Everything I wanted to do with the first Guitar Hero, they are putting into the second. Bass or Rythym guitar for second player, different difficulties for each player, a practice mode to slow down and learn the hard parts, more and more songs, non-cover studio tracks, colorful SG controllers.

The dueling banjo multiplayer is fun for a while, but gets old quick. Harmonix and Red Octane have really expanded the depth with co-op multiplayer. The ability to have each player on their own difficulty level and play different guitar parts is an answer to my prayers.

Practice mode is something I've become accustomed to with Beatmania. The ability to slow down the song and learn the hard parts is a big improvement to the Guitar Hero set list. I hope this feature is easy to use.

The creaters have announced there will be 40 licensed tracks and some 55 songs total. Even better is they are trying to get studio master tracks instead of covers for the songs. Primus has already announced they're song will be a master track and not a cover. Primus plus bass mode equals heaven.

The thought of jamming out Cowboys from Hell on a pink SG controller makes my eyes water with happiness. Red Octane says all of the styles at E3 will be available for sale. Let's hope so. Maybe I won't feel so weird playing a toy guitar if it's pink...

I cannot wait for this game. Wanting to play the game is the only thing keeping me from going into a drunken, cocaine-induced coma.

  An awesome game

Guitar Hero II, as you likely already know, improved on the original by adding A great guitar/bass duet mode, more real-world gear endorsements, encores, and “Freebird.” I heard some complaints from people that felt the soundtrack could have used more “hits,” but I honestly liked having a few more dark horses in the race. Those whiners should be happy that quite a few of the 10 new songs are well-known songs by the likes Iron Maiden, Deep Purple, Rick Derringer, Rancid, and Toadies. Also, I couldn’t fail to mention just how crucial the inclusion of “The Trooper” is – Maiden’s scorching leads have no peer in the world of metal.

RedOctane was bought out shortly after the release of their first game, Guitar Hero - something to be grateful of since Harmonix, the ones who created Frequency and Amplitude among many others were the ones who did it. With this in mind, you can expect the game to be even better.

The new Cherry Gibson SG guitar controller is much, much better and easier to use than the original; unlike the first all-plastic controller, this one has some sort of resin on it that makes hitting the notes easier. Also, the note buttons, whammy bar, and strummer work better than before. And who can pass up the Cherry color?

Like the controller, the gameplay is much improved on as well. Hammer-ons and pull-offs are easier this time around; where you had to have enarly perfect timing before, this one gives you a wider timespan to hit them. Easy mode is still easy, but expert mode has you playing every single note. The user interface is improved, showing you a statistics screen including how many notes you hit, your average multiplier, and the percentage of notes you hit correctly in each section. And FINALLY, you have a Practice mode! There are more songs, and a wider variety of them too, including death metal and techno.

It still has flaws. One of the more noticeable flaws occurs when you start a game on another difficulty. When you switch difficulties, your guitar stays the same. This means that when you unlock the Grim Ripper in Hard and go to your game on Easy, your character will have the Scythe guitar. Or when you pick the Cherry Gibson for Expert, your Grim Ripper on Hard will be using the Cherry Gibson, even though he's not allowed to change guitars.

Despite this, its still a great game. Go buy it. Go play Free Bird.

This is such an awsome game that the whole family can enjoy! There are various genre's of music and different modes of play. As you play the songs (and complete them) you will unlock more games. What's cool is your band can "earn" money. Anyone that starts playing will be instantly hooked!

  Gameplay Improvements
Review created: 08/08/07

I have to say, Guitar Hero II's gameplay is way more intuitive than Guitar Hero I, at least in terms of hammered notes. They finally make sense! The co-op multiplayer is pretty great as well, as long as you and your friends are willing to share lead guitar.

However, Career Mode really starts to suck towards the end - not because it's necessarily hard (which is really, really is on Hard and Expert) - but because the music gets progressively more and more single-minded. They start you off with sets that are mixed up in terms of era and genre, but, eventually you end up playing the last two sets where virtually every song is a lame metal track. If you love metal, then you'll love the end of this game. But, if you believe the true guitar heroes were the ones from the classic rock era, you're going to be excited, and then progressively more disappointed as the rock you love all but disappears from the track lists. Even Free Bird loses its luster after an ordeal like sets 7 and 8.

So, great game, but at least to this reviewer, way less cool music.

This is a great game. This game has a good songlist on it and the controller works perfectly for this game. The graphics are not the best and they are better for the xbox 360, which is a better buy if you have one, but it still is an awesome game. If you like rock or music in general you need this game and that probably includes everyone. I wish there were more classic rock songs on it but the game is still great. Must Buy!!

Guitar Hero II vs. Guitar Hero 1 PS2
Review created: 05/17/07

Being so busy with our eBay Business, we seem to always make time to play Guitar Hero. If you have not picked up a Guitar hero game and guitar yet, you should in your free time. In my honest opinion, I think GH2(Guitar Hero 2) is not as good as the first version. I think it all depends on your taste in songs. The gameplay is the same as Guitar Hero 1, just a new set of songs.

If you are a newcomer to the Guitar Hero Series, are deciding which game to purchase first, I would say take a look at the song list. The gameplay is very similar to the first version. Both versions have easy, medium, difficulty levels. If you have never played guitar before, I suggest you start with easy mode. As soon as you play, you will be addicted to the game like the million other Guitar Hero Fans out there.

We are looking forward to Guitar Hero III! I think this series of games is very similar to DDR, just a different simulation obviously with guitar. It's great fun for family, kids and friends. Now is your chance to become that rock star you have always dreamed of being when you were growing up.

Enjoy and Rock On!

Better than GHI only because the songs are more varied genre-wise and it's a little bit harder. In addition, you can earn money after performances to spend in the shop. My only complaint is that one of my guitars won't work on this game (it does for the first one).

I purchased this guitar hero two for my son. It is very addicting. We try to out battle each other and see who gets the most points, gets the most notes right and who gets the highest percentage per song. My only dislike is i didnt buy the bundle with two guitars , now I have to share his toy. I decided to buy this on ebay because 1. they were sold out everywhere at the time, 2 even with shipping it was cheaper and 3 i always shop ebay they have the best deals and the best dealers hands down

Guitar Hero II for Playstation 2 by Red Octane - FUN!!!
Review created: 01/03/07
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Guitar Hero II was purchased to compliment Guitar Hero. Our kids love the game and sharing it with their friends. They loved the concept and the songs that were initially introduced in the first game.

Like an answer to their prayers...Guitar Hero II allows them and/or their friends to play two different style guitars or even the bass. They like being able to play different courses throughout the songs. They play it over and over again and still play the original game too. Some of them prefer the songs on the first one over the selections on the second version. However, the point is that for the money spent...this is a game they put in again and again to play.

The children think the company should give them special recognition because so many of their friends and peers have purchased their own games and guitar controllers after either playing it at our house or just hearing about the fun from one of the other kids who had.

All of us love the game and are looking forward to updates and/or advancements in instruments and songs! It is actually a fun game the whole family can play because most of the current sound tracks are from mom & dad's generations. Thus the kids would like future improvements to include groups and songs from their generation...as well, we would like to see future improvements that would allow almost any kind of musical instrument controllers that one would find on stage in a real life performance; like keyboard or piano, drums or percussion, wind instruments, orchestra, techno, etc. Also other types and/or styles of music besides rock-n-roll has been suggested a few times!?! Hopefully this is not the last of Guitar Hero we see...from Red Octane, Activision and/or Harmonix Music Systems! Maybe these suggestions from this review or others like it will find its way to the producers of the games and inspire them to continue upgrading the fun!!!

I hope that this review will prove useful and provide insite to your own consideration for purchase. It truly has been money well spent for the hours of fun that has been applied to date! We are in no way shape or form being compensated in any fashion for this review. So what are you waiting for? Start your own fantasy world tour today! Who knows...maybe they'll (the children) will be inspired to become future real life performers!?!

A perfect sequal to one of the most entertaining games that I have ever played. The set list is fully packed with hits like Killing in the Name, War Pigs, and who could forget FREEBIRD. the bonus tracks are something to be marveled as well, with returns by Freeze Pop and Made in Mexico as well as some new favorites including Strong Bad with TROGDOR and one the greatest bands in the world DETHKLOK from Metalocalypse.
A clear favorite on anybodys wish list guaranteed to bring smiles on christmas morning.

Guitar Hero II, cons and pros

I was extremely excited about this game before it came out and I still am after it came out. This game is very good, and much harder than Guitar Hero I. The songs are a much different style than the first one as well, so there's a big change from that. It really all depends on your tastes, but the 2nd game is just overall better. There's more options in the game as well as more songs. It's extremely fun to play with another person with the new pro face-off mode. All in all, the songs in both games are much different, and you have to see for yourself really if you like the songs. If you don't like the songs, then you probably just won't like the game unless you're looking for a challenge.
