The Redbook, Guide to U.S. Coins is an excellent tool for collectors. It provides basic details about every coin minted by the U.S. Mint. Grading details on the coins as well as a basic price guide. The price guide is where I have the biggest issue. The prices have been random at best, especially over the last 2 years. Gold and silver have been going up rapidly, it has caused this books price guide to be out of date before it even hits the stores. Why do I state this? Well, Gold went up over $200 in the last year, Silver went up over $8 in the last year. How do you think that affected gold and silver coins? They skyrocketed! There is nothing a once a year publication can do to overcome this problem. However, there is something the collector can do, get price guides that are issued weekly, monthly or even quarterly. You can buy monthly coin magazines at any book store. These are much more accurate methods of figuing coin values when considering your next purchase. CoinWorld is another good source for coin prices There are also online sources for coin prices that can be useful if they are not inflated prices. Several ebay sellers use these sites as reference guides to try and convience the buyers that they are getting a great deal. I hope this was helpful, especially for you new collectors.
