  A Great Book Group Read
Review created: 11/16/09

I like to read realistic fiction with a historical basis. This book gave information about the difficulties the people of the Channel Islands had to endure during the 5 year German occupation. I appreciated the strong character development and a solid sense of place, especially when the main character arrived on Guernsey Channel Island for an extended visit to write. The 30 something spinster novelist Juliet Ashton made a personal connection with many of Guernsey's residents by writing to them prior to her stay. Once she arrives on the island Juliet acquires much more than information about the residents' suffering during the war and how they carried on with their lives once liberated. I couldn't put the book down and appreciated the romantic plot with many sub plots that made the book very interesting . I don't want to give too much away. This is a great book group read because there is so much to discuss.

  Weird name - Fab book!

How could a war story be uplifting? This one is! An easy read with a cleverly woven story that you pick out by reading the letters and piecing them together - very well done. Who said men won't want to read this? We have a guy who comes to our book group and he loved it (and yes, he is happily married!). Great on the beach or train read - easy to pick up and put down without losing your thread. Enjoy!

When I first picked up this book; I wasn't sure that I would like it. I didn't think that reading a series of letters would be very interesting. However, I was very wrong! Annie Barrows and Mary Ann Shaffer made me feel I like was receiving the letters and I wanted to get to the next one! I also enjoyed learning more about this time in our history. I belong to a book club and it gives me the opportunity to read books I wouldn't normally pick out for myself. This was one of them. I am glad I read it!

  love the book!

This book's writing was creative and witty. It was so entertaining to read the story written in letters. The stories of the writers were fascinating. I loved to learn about little details I missed out on about WWII and this little island of Guernsey. It was an upbeat post war book that I couldn't put down and was sad when it was over.

I liked the history that was included in this book. Good read and nice for a bookclub book. Probably not a great read for a man.

I utterly enjoyed reading this book. I think it should be made into a movie. The characters came to existance by mere letters and a shared experience. A movie could make it visual by showing the experiences of Elizabeth, but the book did it for the introduction of Remy.

I bought this book for my book club and absolutely loved it. The book is written as a series of letters which took a little time to get use to. But by the end of the book, you don't want it to end. I highly recommend this book.

I purchased this novel because I had heard so much about it. There were some very interesting aspects of the book that I found entertaining. The format (all letters) however, caused me to lose interest in the book.

This was the most wonderful book, I shall read it over and over. It was just one I couldn't put down. I wasn't too thrilled about it just being letters written, but it was the most wonderful way to get the thoughts across. I really enjoyed reading this book. Perhaps younger people who don't really remember World War II won't understand the feelings of the people who are going through these things, but even though I was in the United States, we learned through the news media about how difficult things were in Europe. A most wonderful book, everyone who reads it will learn so many things that shouldn't be forgotten.

This book was selected by one of my book club members. We live 20 miles from the nearest book store so many of my books are purchased online with excellent results.
This being a bestseller the library had a waiting list for it, so online is the only way to go.
This was a wonderful story set in WWII on the British Channel Islands. It was written in letter form, a delightful way to read about the occupation of the islands by the German Army. It was not your usual WWII heavy reading.
I loved the story and found out that two of my British friends who were children during that time were also evacuated from thier homes and sent to live with family in the country for protection.
A great read.

I work in a large bookstore and noticed brisk sales for this book. I had checked it out once or twice and didn't think it was for me, but then I was helping a few people and they mentioned it so I decided to give it a shot. I am so glad! It is very different, and covers a very interesting period, the Occupation, and is told in a unique way. I was sorry to see it end! I would recommend it highly, and often do at work.

  Gentle folk under duress
Review created: 06/06/09
by:

I thoroughly enjoyed the WWII setting and learned a great deal about the island of Guernsey. The use of letters to develop characters and plot was interesting and a method that could not be employed in a modern setting as people no longer write long letters to one another and do not save their emails either. It is a gentle book about a harsh time when people generally behaved well under duress, a quality I hope will be revived soon.
