A legacy carrier flies into self-destruction
Some believe that the seeds for the fall of Eastern Air Lines were sown during the tenures of Eddie Rickenbacker and Frank Borman--coming to full-fledged fruition when Frank Lorenzo added the airline to his Texas Air empire. This book provides a detailed analysis of the stormy last days of this great American air carrier from the time Lorenzo acquired the company until a bankruptcy court took it away from him. Despite Lorenzo transforming Continental into a smaller, more profitable carrier in the first half of the 80s, he could not repeat this success when he welcomed Eastern into his fold. Some believe he was trying to destroy the airline by eliminating the militant unions that had long been a thorn in the side of Eastern. On the other hand, there are some who accused Lorenzo of demantling Eastern only for the sake of a stronger Continental.
