Grizzly Man The Mysterious Timothy Treadwell

I was glued to the television when we first watched Grizzly Man as I had never seen, nor heard of, a man walking and living among these magnificent beast!
This is a documentary that incorporates 13 summers of Timothy Treadwell's filming the Grizzlies and himself in the Great Bear Maze of Alaska.
A lot of people poke fun at this man, but I invite these people to do as Timothy did, stand your ground against a full grown Male Grizzly that slams him with his head. Was it bravery, courage, stupidity? I don't think it was none. I believe it was having a knowledge of the Grizzly and knowing that if you show fear or run it is a natural response to attack.
He carried no gun, not even mace, just his wits. In the end nothing could save him.
As introduced in the beginning of the film, Timothy and his girlfriend are both killed in their thirteenth summer with the bears. A Rogue attacked them as they slept.
You will see some fantastic bear footage like two male grizzlies in a fight for the alpha prestige.
The movie captures the spirit of a troubled man that sought a sense of belonging and self-worth by studying bears like no other man has ever done before. The movie does include some crude language and a morbid talking coroner.
I have since watched it 5 times and every-time I do I love it more. Its a movie you will not regret owning.

  Grizzly Man (2005, DVD)

The amazing thing about Timothy Treadwell was that he survived 13 summers in the Alaska wilderness, living among gigantic, ferocious grizzly bears, until one of them finally ate him. Treadwell was a combination environmental activist, societal rebel, filmmaker, nutcase and holy fool. In other words, he was not unlike Werner Herzog, director of "Grizzly Man," the brilliant new documentary about Treadwell's life and horrible death. Herzog is much more self-aware than Treadwell ever was, and has much more of a sense of reality and irony. But as a filmmaker drawn to impossible projects ("Fitzcarraldo," "Aguirre, the Wrath of God"), he feels a definite kinship to Treadwell, even as he's appalled by Treadwell's egregious lapses of judgment. Treadwell shot more than 100 hours of film of himself and his beloved grizzlies, and Herzog culls the best of that film for "Grizzly Man." In his own film footage, Treadwell showed himself consistently to be an arrested adolescent, conflating the terrifying behemoths he lived among with his collection of teddy bears. (He speaks constantly of the mortal danger of living among grizzlies, but never quite seems to believe his own words.) Yet he also captured some of the most amazing nature scenes ever recorded, and Herzog respects him for that. (In his narration, Herzog also expresses great tenderness toward Amie Huguenard, the woman who loved Treadwell, followed him to the wilderness despite her fear of bears, and shared his horrible fate.) Whereas Treadwell sought order in nature, and believed the grizzlies loved him as much as he loved them, Herzog sees nothing in Treadwell's story except the workings of a chaotic universe sending one more dreamer to his doom. But because Treadwell's dreams were so outsized, Herzog sees him as a brother. So, thanks to Herzog, do we.

  A Film that Sparks Conversation

First off: I rate this film a 5 out of 5 not because I agree or disagree with the message it conveys, but rather because it does it with such fervor and conviction. Timothy Treadwell's bear-seeking adventures are bound to raise the ire of environmentalists and non-environmentalists alike, but it's indisputable that the footage he captured is something we won't see the likes of again. The movie is really two movies in one: samples of the incredible footage he captured, and a glimpse into Tim's troubled life. Starting with an account of Timothy's tragic death, the movie steps back and walks through his life, and the vast regions he claimed to protect.

Cinematographically, I thought the film was a masterpiece. Even the soundtrack was memorable, and I had to watch it twice to really absorb everything. That said, I'm sure I could watch it a third, or even a fourth time without getting bored.

Riveting, Mysterious, Funny, Sad - It's got it all!

It really depends what kind of movies you like before anyone can say that you'll love or hate Grizzly Man. Basically, Werner Herzog (the director), is telling a documentary of Timothy Treadwell's documentary of bears.

Absorbed with grizzly bears, Treadwell (who resembles a Californian style surf dude), spent 13 summers in Alaska before finally meeting his demise through a grizzly bear attack. (Don't worry, I didn't give anything away...you find this out in the first 15 minutes...if you didn't know it already.) Him and his girlfriend were found mauled in the camp that they had been using to study the incredible creatures that Treadwell loved so much.

Herzog uses a mix of his own footage and interviews but the real good stuff is that of Treadwell's, who left behind over 100 hours of film.

Treadwell's demeanor and style of talking with the animals (more than just bears) is comical and I found myself chuckling quite a bit at his antics. If you love bears, scenery, documentaries, and a mysterious style of understanding what people live and die for, this movie is worth it. The footage of the wildlife and nature is breathtaking and I don't think you'll be disappointed.

This guy really had problems. He was wacko!!!! He was crying over a dead bee. Crying to the fox and telling him how much he loved him. Save ME!!! He had no business making friends with the fox. It's a wild animal. NO TOUCHY!!! I had to turn it off. I couldn't take anymore of his psycho babble. I loved the footage of the bears. They were beautiful. But I don't feel he had any business harrassing the poor things. And frankly he deserved to be eaten by the bear. I feel sorry for the poor bear that did what came naturally. He was food.

I had a previous copy of this and it went bad so I bought this new dvd. It's a super semi documentary about one man's descent into total madness because of his dislike for humanity and his incessant need to want to bond with bears. The footage that he had taken prior to his death in the Alaskan wilderness is breathtaking, the the footage of the grizzlies is amazing. Well worth the investment, the type of movie one can watch over and over again and garner something new with each viewing.

My curiosity got the better of me with this movie, but don't waste your time or money. This man was totally crazy, as were most of his friends. What a waste that his girlfriend, who was planning on leaving him, didn't make her escape sooner.

Its sad the guy died, but seriously there was something wrong with him.
I didn't like it. Obviously its a documentary.. but they didn't have to be so boring about it.

Bottom line... if you want to see it.... rent it
that way you won't have a crappy movie collecting dust.

I can't believe people are giving this film such low ratings. I work in film and study it. This is superb filmaking in so many ways. Leave your personal biases aside and allow your self to be mesmerized. You will neve see anything like this without looking very hard. There is something to this film I cannot explain. Werner Herzog outdid himself...

Though i don't agree with Tims approach (lets face it grizzlies aren't teddy bears!) I do admire his passion & spirt toward the mighty bears of Alaska.Just remember folks bears wild or tame should be appreciated from a distance!

If you love animals you will be both drawn to and shocked by this documentary.
I think it is respectfully done and I hope it enlightens people to Timothy Treadwell's mission and passion rather than his tragic death. Some people criticize him as reckless , I only wish more people felt a connection to animals this way , a feeling that we share the environment with them and need to protect them. I only wish Mr. Treadwell would've taken better precautions to defend himself against an attack because the world is a sadder place
without heroic people like him.

This is a must see! Some harsh language, but is still a must see! I just wish they would have shown the pics of Tim when they found him and would have played the audio of what happened. The trill of a person getting to do what they love is what life's about. Anyone who watches this film should get the purpose and the meaning of what it's about. Some of the images senn in this movie are some of the best wildlife images I've ever seen!!!!!! Two thumbs up!

The scenery in this film is breathtaking! Timothy Treadwell captured some incredible images of nature. He allows us to see wild grizzly bears up close. Plus, wild foxes! It's amazing how he was able to form a bond with these wild animals! He lived among them for 13 summers! In this documentary we are able to get a glimpse of what Treadwell was trying to accomplish. He really loved the animals, and wanted to protect them. This is a must-see in my opinion! A+!!

Don't Waste Your Time or Money
Review created: 10/21/06

I checked this movie out at the library, and I would advise anyone to do that or rent it before wasting their money on it. The guy was a lunatic. He babbled constantly. He cursed worse than a sailor. I love documentaries but I did not like this one and wouldn't recommmend it. It is sad what happened to him, but he had it coming to him being out there like that. He had some real problems, even in the film his parents said he'd been into drinking and drugs. I thought it was really wierd him sitting there crying over the bumble bee too. He had some serious issues. I hate it that his girlfriend who had talked about leaving, didn't get out before she was mulled by the bear also.
I'd give this one a thumb's down.

  Grizzly Man is Entertaining!
Review created: 12/04/08

This movie is a HOOT! The footage of bears and foxes is better and more personal than any I have seen before. This is kind of a documentary on Tim more than the bears, and what I like about it, is that it uses footage that he would not have chosen to use had he been alive to make it himself. Therefore, you get to really see what it was like for him living out there on the preserve.
