) Very well laid out album. Great slow and soft songs with wildly entertaining upbeat ones. A great mixture of instruments and beautiful lyrics. One of the best albums in my collection.

Sufjan is an amazing songwriter and musician and I was very impressed when I came across this album. I had known about Sufjan through is work with the Danielson Family and several reviews I had read but was not blown away by the little clips I had heard on various websites. I had hoped that his music would be as quirky as the stuff he had done with Daniel. It was only after buying this album on sale and listening several times that I was able to connect with the subtle brilliance and at that point I realized that my CD collection needed every project this guy has worked on. 5 Stars

let me just say this first. Always do your homework. Go to amazon or itunes and listen to clips before buying any music.
I decided to buy this album because I heard Illinois and loved it. My own passion for music helps me appreciate the complexities that are in Sufjan's music. When you open the cd booklet, you will turn to the inside and see several people's names followed by an instrument or vocals or both. Sufjan's name is last. There is an entire paragraph of instruments that he plays for this album.
If you enjoy instrumental folk music, mixed with..sufjan's own acoustic-vocal endeavors, I'm partial to this album, but I also call Michigan home. If values are also important to you, know that sufjan is a follower of Christ.
