I had a bunch of early quality trains, and at this point in my life, and not having a son to pass it along to, i was going to sell them- but had no idea of their value. the purchase of this guide allowed me to post them at a fair price both to me and the auction winners- it worked!! sold them all, with some being bid way up above the guides prices.
IF YOUR A COLLECTOR, THIS BOOK IS A NECESSITY. IT PROVIDES ACURATE ESTIMATES OF MODEL RR EQUIPMENT AND ROLLING STOCK PRICES. THIS WILL PREVENT A NOVICE COLLECT FROM BEING SOLD A PRODUCT WHICH IS OVERPRICED FOR THE CONDITION. SELLERS TO MODEL RR'S TRY HARD TO BE FAIR, BUT AS WITH ALL THINGS THERE ARE THE UNPROFESSIONALS.
Up until a month ago I was afraid to give my honest opinion due to negative feedback from the seller. It is too late to give my opinion now. I hope the sellers will be more honest about what they have to offer.
We bought the book to possibly sell my father in laws train set.Its a good book fairly easy to use. It could use more detailed or descriptive words on each train item. We did use it to itemize the train set so we at least know what the set is worth.
Hi: I have been using the Greenberg pocket price guides for a long time. As a price guide it leaves a lot to be desired. I don't know where they are finding these prices but they do not reflect the true market value in the real world. The value of an item in good to very good condition is really about 25% less than the lower price listed for that item. I have been selling toy trains for a long time and I seldom get prices near what is in this guide. If you need to find information about an item use the guide but don't use those prices to value an item. It is handy to identify scarce or rare items.
This is a handy concise "tool" for Lionel Train Collectors. It is just one of many reference tools along with your common sense that allows you to buy, sell or trade Lionel Trains. It is not the "bible" but it is a must have that most collectors use. It's convenient size makes it easy to take along.
The only improvements I would like to see would be to color code the different sections and the addition of some blank pages for notes to each section.
I like the ability to view exactly the item I want, I ca also see a variety of items to choose from. I also like the competition for the pricing. I can select what I want to pay. I don't like the paypal shipping label business. This delays the shipping by many days. IF I MUST PAY FOR IT IN 2-3 DAYS, THEN IT SHOULD BE A MUST THAT THE SELLER IS UNDER THE THE SAME RULE TO SHIP IT IN THE SAME TIME FRAME (2-3 DAYS FROM PAYMENT). I HAVE WAITED AS LONG AS A WEEK OR 2 FOR SHIPPING.
In most cases I can but the same item in a local store for a little more and have it the same day. Please improve you shipping by the sellers or take off the 2-3 payment restriction. Whay is good for the seller should be good for the buyer.
I use this book as kind of a barometer when bidding on lionel trains and accessories. I also have another book by Davis Doyle that I use in conjunction with this one for determining what my maximum bid will be on the items. The Greenberg book however covers all the years from 1901 to present where the Doyle book only covers 1945 to 1969. The only thing I found lacking in the Greenberg book was the fact that it does not list complete train sets where the Doyle book does and researching some non numbered "specialty" cars and items is difficult at times with the Greenberg book but that may be because i'm still new at this. But for a pocket price guide I find it to be a valuable tool for the auctions.
