Album Notes The Gentle Waves includes: Isobel Campbell (vocals, cello). While Isobel Campbell was still a member of Belle & Sebastian, she began working on solo material as the Gentle Waves, which released its first record, THE GREEN FIELDS OF FOREVERLAND, in 1999. This project was not so much a departure from her full time band as a gentler, quieter take on that band's material. FOREVERLAND is an intimate record which features Campbell singing in her unmistakable sweet voice, often nearly whispering to get her point across. A '60s pop vibe also runs the course of the album, as horns aplenty impart a strongly evident bossa nova influence. It's a pleasing, slight pop record, and one that fits snugly within the larger oeuvre of Belle & Sebastian itself.
Editorial Reviews 3 stars (out of 5) - ...sparkling folk pop full of agonizingly pretty melodies and Campbell's winsome vocals... Rolling Stone
...THE GREEN FIELDS OF FOREVERLAND is fundamentally half-an-hour's worth of home-spun cosiness... NME (04/03/1999)
...Campbell's charming girl's voice is a pleasure to listen to, and she frequently succeeds in creating moments of chilly prettiness with her piano, guitar and cello....THE GREEN FIELDS...offers the graceful consolation of evening prayer. CMJ (05/24/1999)
3 (out of 5) - ...[GREEN FIELDS] is just the ticket for those long summer evenings when the birds are singing [and] a breeze is blowing... Alternative Press (08/01/1999)
...Campbell's album, recorded and mixed in just one week, could almost be a collection of long-lost children's TV themes....The melodies are stong...and in places the predominantly pastoral-sounding arrangements have a real charm.... Mojo (05/01/1999)
