Since his days with The Police, guitarist Andy Summers has investigated various avenues of jazz with his own quirky slant. With GREEN CHIMNEYS, he gets to explore Thelonious Monk, one of the most original composers in jazz and one of Summers' greatest influences. This most ambitious project finds Summers in good company, with support from such jazz aces as Peter Erskine, Joey de Francesco, and Dave Carpenter. In a way, Monk is a logical choice for Summers, as the two share similar eccentricities in music. The guitarist's unique wail fits the offbeat melodies of Monk to a T.
Summers sticks to the standard Monk repertoire, offering fresh re-workings of classics like the bouncing title track and "Hackensack," the latter featuring a New Orleans street-beat from Erskine. "Bemsha Swing" oozes along, with Summers doubling on both electric and acoustic guitars. The most raucous track is the grinding "Shuffle Boil," a heavy slammer featuring trumpeter Walt Fowler. The highest point, however, comes with the beautiful "'Round Midnight," on which Summers is joined by none other than Sting--who delivers a steamy vocal performance. Other worthy tracks include the funky "Evidence" and Summers' delightful solo acoustic reading of "Ruby My Dear."
