Greatest Hits (Ten Years & Change 1979-1991) by Starship (CD, May-1991, RCA Records USA)

Starhip is about the 3rd or 4th incarnation (who can keep count) of the original Jefferson Airplane. This recording contains recordings by "Jefferson" Starship and it's next renewal "Starship". The only major player left from the original Airplane on this last flight is Grace Slick (she put "Airplane" on the map with her Acid Classics "White Rabbit and "Don't You Want Somebody to Love?") and it is Grace on "Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now" that makes this CD worthwhile. She may have lost some of iceberg/foghorn vocal gymnastics, but she's always effective and easily identified whether singing lead, duets or background. I got the CD for this one song only. Sadly, Grace felt she was too old to be rocking and left the band and San Francisco and moved to Malibu to become a successful painter. Nothing's gonna stop her now! Go Gracie.

This is a Starship greatest hits collection but specifically it is a collection from Jefferson Starship & Starship. OK, the name Starship is in both bands but both bands are TOTALLY different! Jefferson Starship (originally Jefferson Airplane) was a traditional 70s rock band but as the early 80s came along the style of music changed to a more pop rock sound & as a result the band became simply known as Starship (along w/ a lineup change.) To be honest I really like Starship over Jefferson Starship when it comes down to it because Starship's music actually was very direct w/ heavy drum beats & rocking guitars that you can't help but get into the music. Also, at times the band made some of the most melodic songs that are some of my all-time favorites (for example "Sara".) Anyway, Greatest Hits offers tracks from both bands & is pretty decent for a listen if you are new to both bands (like I was a few years ago.) The best tracks in my opinion are "Stranger," "No Way Out," "Don't Lose Any Sleep," "Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now," "Sara," "It's not Enough," "We Built this City," & "Good Heart."

No matter what name they go by - Starship is a great band. My favorite on this album is "Nothing's gonna stop us now"
