This 2006 collection presents many of the finest solo tunes by Journey's powerhouse vocalist, Steve Perry. In addition to drawing from his successful debut, STREET TALK (1983), which yielded the dramatic hit single "Oh Sherrie," and the largely overlooked FOR THE LOVE OF STRANGE MEDICINE ('94), the anthology features tracks that didn't make it onto any official Perry albums, including the smooth ballad "Against the Wall" and "Don't Fight It," his rocked-out '82 collaboration with Kenny Loggins. Former Journey bandmate Jonathan Cain once observed that "God gave Steve a voice that rings like a bell," neatly encapsulating this AOR vet's lasting appeal. His arrival in Journey took the band from obscurity to superstardom, and their attempt to carry on with another singer in the wake of his departure inspires fond thoughts of the post-Jim Morrison Doors. A glance at the title makes it clear that Columbia's not shy about the marketing hook here. Hardcore Perry fans will jump at the chance to hear previously unavailable tracks like "Summer of Luv" and the demo of "If You Need Me, Call Me." Likewise, newbies will be drawn to the perfect pop of "Oh Sherrie" and "Foolish Heart." The connecting thread, Perry's almost unjustly soulful voice, is the distinctive, defining element in these smooth, radio-ready arrangements. At the time that Columbia Records released Steve Perry's Greatest Hits + Five Unreleased, the former Journey lead singer had scored exactly one Top Ten hit as a solo artist ("Oh Sherrie") and placed four other songs in the Top 40, one of which ("Foolish Heart") reached the Top Ten of the adult contemporary charts. It was not the sort of record that would seem to justify the release of a 17-track hits collection. In addition to the hits, the set included assorted album tracks from Perry's two solo albums, Street Talk (1984) and For the Love of Strange Medicine (1994); a couple of songs from the Quest for Camelot soundtrack; four tracks recorded in 1988 for his intended second album, Against the Wall ("Unfortunately, it was never released," he noted tersely); and the 1977 demo recording ...
