The Greatest Generation by Tom Brokaw (1998, Hardcover)

Weaving a wonderful story is always easier when you have good material and that is exactly what Mr. Brokaw collected before he wrote this volume. It is a great read and very thought provoking for any of us in the 40+ time of life.

We owe a great debt to the men and women of this generation for their unselfish faith and pride in the United States of America. It influenced their decision to serve and they often sacrifice their lives for the freedom we enjoy today. Their generation offered the rest of our country many new beginnings, the book reminds us of the stories and helps us to be grateful.

The book is a good reminder of the stories that remind us that freedom is not free and forgetting their lives would be a great tragedy.
If you can't find a copy on E-bay check out the local library and enjoy the time you spend reading and thinking of THE GREATEST GENERATION. Whether or not you have a relative or parent that served it will offer a wonderful reminder of the story that we often never heard first hand.

This is what WWII was all about. Phenomenal stories about the people in the War. Tom Brokaw did an awesome job of bringing this to life.

I have always been fascinated by the strong sense of duty this generation showed. This characteristic was evident both at home as well as abroad.This account also helps to put a face on the experience.

I purchased three copies of this book to give to relatives who lived during that time period, two of whom served in the military. Each one has indicated a great interest and appreciation for receiving the book and for the content they have been reading about. I recommend this book as a great gift for anyone to receive, , even for "non readers" because of the format. It serves as nostalgia for some,experience for others, and encourages appreciation for those who lived during those times as well as historical information.

It is a well thought out book. It tell the stories of a great, if not the Greatest generation, this country has ever produced. My father was one of those people. He spent more than 4 years fighting in the Pacific. He drove a Higging boat on the invasions. He received several medals and the purple heart with clusters. He was a product of the great depression as were virtually all these veterans. They served with pride and never complained or whined. We had several family members who died in both theaters. Yes this is a book that was very much needed. Also keep in mind they not only survived the depression, a world war, but came home and transformed the United States from a depressed nation to the greatest power in the world.

I am 84 yrs old. bought books for my sons and grandsons. They need to know what America was like before people decided that the government should do everything for them. Books purchased were received promptly and they wre in good shape.

I have an 81 year old friend who is part of this "Greatest Generation". He had heard of the book but had never read it. The book was like new when i received it. I warned my friend that it would probably bring back some unpleasant memories and well as good ones. When he spoke of reading several stories, he had tears in his eyes. Just like i did.. Before ordering if from an Ebay seller, I had tried to find a copy of it in several used book stores but failed. Ebay came through for me again. I don't like to expend a lot of energy to make such purchases so punchinga few keys to an Ebay site is very convenient. My Paypal account really speeds up the payment process.

These books really give you an insight of what it is like to make sacrifices for your country and your family. This generation, the books are written about, truley are the last generation to do so.We as a nation needed to be remined of what is what like for our parents and or grandparents to live in such times. We need to follow their example. We also need to Thank them for without their actions, we would not have what we have today. Look them in the eye, shake their hand and speak from the the heart. Tell them Thank You.

I read this book because I never understood my Grandfather who served in WWII. In fact, I never knew that he served at all until his funeral. So, this was my attempt to really get to know what really happened and made him so silent. This book puts faces, names and personalities to those who served and/or gave their life so that the world could be in peace. I found myself laughing and crying when reading, something your run of the mill history books can never do. And yes, I finally understand him better.

I had read the book and thought that my mom-in-law would like it. She called a few days before Christmas to say she had opened it early and was reading already.
