Good Beginning

I've always been a big ELO & Jeff Lynne fan (see my review of the ZOOM TOUR LIVE DVD). Just happened to see this while looking for something different from Mr. Lynn. Got it for a fair price; arrived in excellent condidion. Overall, this CD is pretty good. And it IS different. The album contains a wide variety of song styles, especially when considering these songs were recorded in the late 60s and very early 70s. "Don't Mess Me Up" sounds a bit like Elvis. The "Ben Crawley" song reminds me of Johnny Cash. "My Marge" sounds something like Queen's 'Lazing on a Sunday Afternoon'. 'California Man' sounds exactly like Jerry Lee Lewis, only with strings instead of keys. The album concludes with an original version of 'Do Ya', which is pretty cool. Well, except there's a hidden little ditty (not on the track list) after 'Do Ya' that sounds like Sha Na Na, which segues into an old time piano with a freaky sounding British barker saying 'Good night' over and over. Cool, huh? These guys liked to experiment, which is a good thing. This album, however, isn't for everyone. I like it, but than again, I like a lot of different stuff. From Abba to Zappa, Alan Parsons to Zombie. Disco, Classic 70's tunes, Bluegrass, Sonny & Cher & Herb Alpert. Have you ever heard of the Hawaiian Pups? Yep, got them, too ("Up, up," says Baby Judy!). Of course, I like 'regular' music, as well. Skynyrd, Zeppelin, Cars, Kiss, & Boston (too bad about Brad Delp. Our loss is Rock n' Roll Heaven's gain). But I do have to be a little selective in choosing music when friends come over.
So, does my opinion about this CD really count? Of course, opinions are like... well, you know... everyone's got one, right? Nonetheless, I give it a strong 8 out of 10. Hope that helps.
