Includes liner notes by Robert Townson. This is part of Varese Sarabande's Great Composers series. Although New York-born film composer Elmer Bernstein was so prolific and accomplished that no single-disc collection could truly present all of his finest moments, this 16-track disc does an excellent job of cherry-picking pieces from his most notable scores. Arranged on the basis of song-to-song flow rather than chronology, this edition of GREAT COMPOSERS leads off with a set of Bernstein's finest compositions for Westerns, most notably the powerful theme from THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN, and moves into the subtler territory of his work for dramas such as TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD (that movie's atmospheric "Main Title") and MY LEFT FOOT (the lilting "Love Spoken"). Closing the set is Bernstein's appropriately epic "Suite" for THE TEN COMMANDMENTS, which was one of the first movies to garner his music serious attention. While Bernstein aficionados will likely own many of the individual soundtracks represented here already, GREAT COMPOSERS is ideal for those seeking to sample the scope of his cinematic work.
