An Insight Into Garcia and America

Back when this film first came out, I appreciated it as all us Deadheads appreciate even the most banal or repetitive media related to the band. I think the viewer sees a different side of Garcia's legacy in this documentary, the intimacy of his personal friendships , his pure pleasure of playing music with his friends, the sadness of being trapped as a rock god who can't detach from the responsibilities and demands it entails, and the great impact of traditional American music on his playing and composition.
In this day and age, America seems to lose tough with it's great history and traditions. The cultural heritage we share with the world is enormous in its impact, and yet often we focus on so many foolish and destructive ideals. This film's value for non-Deadheads is every bit as signifigant as it is for all of us hopeless lunatics- a great appreciation of American traditional music and its value in a contemporary context. If you want a reason to chant "USA, USA"- this is it.....
