The Grapes of Wrath (DVD, 2004, Fox Studio Classics)

My high school American Literature class read the book this semester and I purchased the DVD to enrich their reading experience. I love the DVD; it allowed us to talk about director John Ford's choice of leaving out of the film certain scenes from the book. The great historical perspective the DVD offers about the drought years and also about the filming process my students found intriguing. I would highly recommend this DVD for a similar class or for any movie buff who wants to see a great movie filmed by a master director. It's a slice of film history at its finest and a look at how America responded (or didn't)to those who lost everything except faith and the will to persevere. I hope this review was helpful.

This is one of my favorite old movies. One really gets a feel for what it was like during the depression. It's amazing enough how the Joad family make it all the way to California in that beat up truck, and again how close they were and stuck together. This is a story of struggle, love, murder, and most of all generosity. The ultimate search for the American dream.

I didn't receive this tape, I want a refund, Well I don't know anythin gelse to say, I paid for this item and I have not received it , It has well been over a month ago,I don't understand why,I was never given an explanation,

Funny, but although my wife says that this is a staple of high school English classes across the country, I don't ever recall reading the book or seeing the movie in class. I bought this DVD for some background entertainment concerning old US Route 66, prior to a trip I've been planning along the remaining sections for some time.
I would rate this as a must see to learn how rough it was on people from the farming states in the Midwest during the dust bowl years. How they risked everything to try and overcome desolation and despair, only to find more where the grass was supposed to be greener. Through the entire movie, the Joad family continued to show a gritty triumph of the human spirit regardless the pitfall before them. As far as the product was concerned, the DVD was of the highest quality and packaged as best as any could be expected, a fine purchase all around.

A real must have classic movie about the dust bowl days of no work and farmers losing their land,being run off after living there a hundred yrs. No work and traveling to the land of milk and honey...Calif with promise of plenty of work, when in reality there was not so much work and the wages paid was just afew cents a day, not even eough to feed the family....it's about the hardships in those days,the endurance, the injustice.....the love. It's truely a wonderful movie. One of Henry Fonda's first movies....lots of star actors. A real portrayal of what life was like way back when.

THIS MOVIE TELLS IT LIKE IT WAS AND IN MY OPINION THE BEST DAYS, OH SURE TIMES WERE HARD THEN, BUT VALUES WERE VERY HIGH. THIS MOVIE SHOULD BE A MUST SEE IN THE CLASSROOM OF SCHOOLS. THE ACTORS LIVED THE PART NOT JUST FOR THE SCREEN. I HOPE THEY NEVER COLORIZE IT.

I purchased the Grapes of Wrath as a Christmas present for my 94.6 year old Dad plus I also sent him Tobacco Road. He wanted those 2 movies for ole time sake.
I will purchase again DVD's on EBay. These two movies are from the year of 1940 and I remember myself watching them as reruns in my teenage years. They are Classics. They don't make good movies like those anymore.

I bought this as a christmas gift for my mom this coming year. She has always wanted this dvd and i could never find it in stores - so i tried ebay and bought it. i am excited to give this to her.

I'm past 80 years of age and saw "Grapes" when it came out. Last week I just watched it again after dark. I could only watch half as it scared me and reminded me of my childhood in a mining toun in Alabama. I did not sleep well the rest of the night. I got up angry remembering past events involving local police, rich people, the KKK and how poor strangers were treated where I lived. I finished "Grapes" in the daylight. Every damn child should see this movie on an empty stomach ! I left Alabama in the 50's never to return again ! A wonderful movie everyone should see.

Great portrayal of America during the time of the great depression. Movie was just as moving and eye opening as seen when I was a child! They do not make movies like this anymore, a must see in a persons lifetime! A True American Classic!!!

Great movie about the Great Depression. Todays economic times mirror some of those of the 30s. A good reminder of how bad things can become. At least now we can still watch movies.

Wanted to read it because it is a classic. It was well written and easy to read. I would recommend it to anyone who wants to learn more about this time in our country. I also viewed the video and the book follows it very closely.

I bought this video as a Christmas present. I was very glad to find it on sale. It is hard to get. Very nice. Very nice.

Look forward to a nice snowy afternoon and sit back and watch this movie. It is a classic and reading several Pulitzer Prize books about the great depression will give this movie even more depth. Thank you.

I bought this DVD left positive feed back for delivery when I opened it a week later to view it the picture was completely scrambled. When I contacted seller he said it was my dvd player which is brand new and everything else plays perfect on it plus I have two others and one on my Computer and it does the samething. This came with no label so I am suspicious it is a bootleg. Beware of this seller. James

This is a 5 star movie in my opinion. A must see movie. You can imagine how the people must have felt in losing their homes and the land they had grown up on. It was the only thing they knew. The hardship, trials and good times touched my heart. It is a movie that I could watch over and over.
