  Worthy addition, despite the filler
Review created: 05/12/09

Grand Theft Auto; for better or worse, these three words are known by almost every member of this generation.

The basic premise is where the player takes on the role of a nefarious but often sympathy-worthy protagonist, who moves up in the world by doing "missions" for allies and contacts, in a combination of running, gunning, driving, and exploring a 'play-at-your-own-pace' "sandbox."

That's what to expect in terms of game play. But, the question is, just what makes the 9th title to bear the GTA logo have to offer?

+ Better NPCs and story plot.
No, Niko (the player's character) wasn't betrayed and left for dead. In fact, although obviously a criminal, Niko isn't as rough around the edges. Despite the body count, we actually get to see a more humane and rounded character than in previous installments.
Also, the missions weave a very intricate and fairly well rounded plot. You're not going to buy an ice cream factory to sell drugs out of, or try to take pictures of a man in a diaper. Instead, through small bites, you'll get to see more and more of the company Niko keeps, and they are almost people in their own right rather than a voice on a cell phone.

+ Better graphics
This is just about the third major change in GTA's look, and it can be a very refreshing experience. While the previous look of the game, from GTA III through Vice City Stories, has been consistent, if improved upon for each game, the new look and feel of Liberty City is completely different, and it's a good thing.
To personify the graphics, take this example: even in San Andreas, shooting someone in the head with a sufficient gun would result in their head disappearing. Now, in IV, if you take to the streets to obtain a car with lethal force, shooting with a pistol and hitting the driver will result in bloody bullet holes in whichever window you used, as well as often the corpse slumping against the horn while the car drifts out of control.

+/-New Chase Mechanics
In previous iterations, unwanted police attention was easily shakable by running over certain power-ups. Well, the new system has thrown every last bit of that out the window. Now, a wanted level will start Police on a circle-shaped "cone of interest" that will follow you if they are able to, and has to be escaped unseen in order to avoid arrest. The more stars, the wider the search area.
This can be more fun and "gritty," but sometimes it can be irritating if fairly unwanted.

- Lots of "filler" material
The darkside of well-rounded characters. Before you can ever hope to get to the helicopter dogfight mission, you'll have to play a mission where you take a girl bowling.
And, if you want to stock up on guns for the bank heist mission, you'd best get one of your friends to give you a discount - by taking him to Cluckin' Bell and playing pool with him on multiple nights.

- Lots of graphical glitches and bugs
For the record, when GTA III first came out, it was very buggy, too.
Expect to get far less out of your video card than for other games, and be warned of constant crashes.... but I'm sure enough large patches to download should add enough bandages on holes that perhaps should have been corrected before launch.

So, to sum up:

Is GTA IV the best GTA game ever?
That's fairly subjective.

Is GTA IV the best game of all time?
No.

Is GTA IV worth the time and money it costs?
Yes. While not the bloodiest of the series, it has more meat than most.

  Great game, retarded security features
Review created: 11/07/09

This was a fun game, but has horrible security features.

Examples include:
1. You can't save the game unless you're connected to Windows Live
2. Forced installation of annoying DRM and other crapware
3. You need to register with Windows Live and have rockstar-social club account to even play the game.

"Much better than it's given credit for..."

In Grand Theft Auto IV, you play as Eastern European, Niko Bellic. He comes to America encouraged by his cousin's stories of wealth and women, and to escape his past. Arriving in Liberty City, based off New York, he soon finds that his cousin, Roman, was not entirely truthful. Roman is living in a run-down apartment, working as a taxi driver. Niko and his cousin have to start from virtually nothing and build their way up. And, thus, begins Grand Theft Auto IV.

The gameplay was quite entertaining. Like it's predecessors, GTA IV is a great game to just screw around, but what sets it apart is that I actually enjoyed the story and there wasn't constant, unbearable gangster dialogue.

In my opinion, GTA IV has an excellent story, possibly better than Vice City's. There are many twists and turns as betrayal and revenge take their course and Niko struggles with life in America. You will meet many people along the way, some you will befriend, some you will kill. There is never a sure moment in the life of Niko Bellic and that makes for a great, fulfilling story.

The graphics in Grand Theft Auto IV are very nice, but also demanding of your system. A lot of reviewers unfairly gave the game a poor score because they tried to run the game on too high settings with inadequate hardware. I was able to play the game on medium settings with about 25-30 FPS. Overall the graphics were great and well deserving of a 10.

The sound in Grand Theft Auto IV is very nice. There is good music and many radio stations to listen to while driving around. Sound is hard to rate because it is unique to every game and it's usually not so bad that it deserves less than a 9 or 10. Just to clarify, though, the sound in this game is good.

One of the Grand Theft Auto series strengths is the replayability. Even after beating it, it's fun to pick it back up and just blow off some steam by getting chased by as many cops as possible or just driving around the city. There are many things to do when just screwing around. Also Grand Theft Auto IV includes an online mode which is sure to increase the replayability.

This game is often underrated and definitely deserves a try. If playing it on PC, I recommend making sure your hardware is sufficient though because it is demanding. Great story, graphics, sound, and replayability make Grand Theft Auto IV very deserving of a 10.

It is a good game. Not great. I have both GTA Vice City and San Andreas and enjoyed those games more. I also think Scarface is a better game. Had high expectations and did not quite live up to the hype. I am playing on a 256MB 8600GTS Card and it can only play at low settings. You need a video card with 512MB and DDR3 minimum.

So addicting I had to uninstall it from my PC
Review created: 02/18/09
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

This latest edition of GTA is top notch. I was hesitant to install it after reading some nasty reviews, but I did anyway. Installation took about 20 minutes with activation. The graphics are stunning, the game play was improved slightly, and the missions are addicting albeit a little too easy. After about 8 weeks, I really started to get into the game and spent a couple of Saturdays playing for 6+ hours. I also spent some work hours playing. I decided to uninstall it from my system and come back to it later due to the addictive nature. My only complaint about the game is the fact that you have to please certain people by hanging out with them. Cousin Roman is an absolute pest and calls constantly to hang out and get drunk or play darts or whatever. Its much more fun going on the missions, stealing cars, and killing....

Worth the money, every penny of it...just make sure you have hours to kill. I got to 44% completion before I had to hang up my guns so I could get some work done.

Slow and Painful Setup... Need Powerful PC to Run.

The setup is a "pain in the ass". You got to register 2 different accounts; one with rockstar games website and another with windows live games website and link your SN# to the account in order for your game to be saved and to play mutli-player online. If you dont have a good video card in your pc; you will end up with choppy and low resolution game play.

  buggy and poor performance
Review created: 01/07/09
by:
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

The game installed but would not run. It took about a week with tech support to resolve the issue (mainly installing or uninstalling DirectX 9, "Microsoft Games for Windows - Live", Microsoft Visual Studio C++ 2008, patches, and the game.)

Once the game is running, the performance is averages about 20 to 30 FPS with a Quad Core Q6600 overclocked to 3.0 GHz and nvidia 8800 GTX video card. The framerate can drop to about 12 when there's a lot of enemies and buildings on the screen.

The story/dialog seems too predictable and sometimes boring. The taxi, ambulance, and vigalante side missions are not as fun as in the previous GTAs. The player control is also worse than in the older GTAs.

Multiplayer is buggy when the server lags and you don't even know it. You only realize that a server is laggy when you shoot someone 1000 times and they don't die, even when it looks like they are standing still.

  Excellent Choice
Review created: 11/01/09
by:

I wanted to have GTA original, but since I live in Argentina, the price in Rockstar online shop is too high for me. So I choose to take a chance with you and all was awsome, just like you described.
The only problem was the condition of the box, you need to put some protection because it came a little bit crushed (that didn't happen only to me, some reviews I read had something related to the condition).

But despite that, everything was splendid, I'm sure that I'm gonna purchase more products from you guys.

Thanks for everything
