Grand Hotel (DVD, 2004)

This film won an academy award for "Best Picture" for a reason. Starring the ever beautiful and immortalized starlet, Greta Garbo, as well as a young Joan Crawford, who stole every scene with her ability to flawlessly exemplify the razor sharp wit, charm and good heart of her character. The leading men include the very gentle and charming John Barrymore, as well as Lionel Barrymore, who plays the role of a desperate working class man with nothing to lose almost too well! This film is not only beautifully directed, edited, and wonderfully cast, it is also accurate about human nature in every sense displayed. Grand Hotel is light-hearted and tragic. It is as bittersweet as life itself. Take the time to sit back and absorb the cinematic masterpiece that it is.

An ensemble of a great cast that today would require a fortune in salary alone, to assemble. Excellent story of love, passion, greed and callousness which still exist in our world almost 80 years later - just look at today's Wall Street!!! Entertainment personified.

Recently I have become a fan of classic movies. One of my favorite actors of the 30's and 40's is Lionel Barrymore. I caught this movies on TCM a while back and just had to own it. I love this kind of movie, recent or classic. It's a tale where the characters stories are intermingled over the period of a short time in a Berlin hotel. Funny, romantic, poignant at times. What else could you ask for in a movie?? Luckily I was able to grab this DVD for a low, low price.

the classic movie is an all time classic. It had all time great stars in the movie. The story is well written. The stars themself are great in doing their jobs. Enjoyable movie to watch over and over again . I would recommend it to anyone anytime.

Unfortunately there is no German spoken in the movie but the lessons in economics both in those times and ours are valuable. The stars in the film give unremarkable performances, I don't understand how it won any awards, it must have been a bad year for movies. Don't get me wrong, it is still a good movie and worth seeing if you have read the book or like the genra.
