This wonderful collection celebrates the gospel roots of '60s soul music. The 13 songs, all written by Curtis Mayfield, are drawn from Mayfield's albums and from his pre-solo work with The Impressions. GOSPEL includes several singles and a riveting, previously unreleased live performance of "It's Alright/Amen." Mayfield's interest in gospel represented no mere dalliance with the genre. From the mid-'60s to 1980, this music was as much a part of his life as such ideals as social conscience and moral outrage. Mayfield's success as an artist stems from his ability to blend his many facets into a cohesive whole. The spiritual content of the songs on GOSPEL is powerful and delightful. This great collection serves as a fine introduction and as a thoughtfully sequenced reexamination.
