More interested in the past than present

I found myself much more interested in Kate Klein's past life; her life out of college, living with Janie, living in the same building as Evan, than her current life as a mom and would-be detective. I would get embroiled in the chapters of the past then disappointed to find myself brought to the present again, and I could barely remember what was even happening.
It was enjoyable, but I did find the ending to be rushed and contrived. I felt like I wasted a lot of time getting to know characters who had nothing to do with anything.
Jennifer Weiner is an outstanding writer, but this one fell a bit flat for me. I had so many questions at the end.
I think the best character (in the present) was the wee lassie, Sophie!
