Album Notes 504 Boys: Master P, Mystikal, Silkk The Shocker (vocals); Daniel (guitar). Producers include: Suga Bear, Carlos Stephens, XL, Keno, Ezell Swang. Since the mid-'90s, Master P's No Limit empire has exerted considerable commercial influence in rap. No Limit artists more than make up in energetic, hard-edged beats and harsh, blunt lyrics what they lack in aesthetics and nuance. Gathering the talents of numerous members of the No Limit extended family, the 504 Boyz have carried the torch for gangsta rap since the demise of Dr. Dre's G-funk. Representing a particular macabre vision of hip-hop reality, GOODFELLAS is particularly unrepentant in its myopic, thug-mentality worldview. Following the 504 Boyz' credo "ball 'til you fall," the lurid, often violent lyrics emphasize unremittingly bleak social realities and explicit sexual scenarios. Forgoing the slick pop production of such artists as rap impresario Puff Daddy, the New Orleans-based crew relies largely on original tracks, with tight drum programming based around whiplash, double time snares. The production is typical of the growing Southern hip-hop scene, clearly favoring faster BPMs and synthesized, as opposed to sampled, basslines.
