Better than The Godfather...really!

I know that there are many Francis Ford Coppola fans who would disagre with me when I say that Goodfellas is better than The Godfather and Marlon Brando's portrayal. However, as a concise picture with a stellar ensemble cast, I think Goodfellas beats it hands down. While The Godfather is an epic picture meant to describe generations of a family, Goodfellas is an excellent portrait of a shorter period in time. Ray Liotta's character has finally become part of "The Family", and he's thrilled about the power, money, and prestige that come with the territory. What he doesn't count on, though, is the intense rivalry and backstabbing that occurs between family members. He also doesn't see the bad things coming--including infidelity, drug addiction, and an unhappy marriage. Goodfellas doesn't glamorize the mob; evil rears its ugly head pretty early in this movie.
Don't miss Scorsese's then-living parents in a few cameo scenes; he has included them in a few of his movies. The downfall of a man is captured eloquently while he's trying to make a good "sauce". It's a brilliant choice of sequencing on Scorsese's part, and he is able to move through the film with terrific pacing.
A good movie, but not for the faint-of-heart! Watch if you like action, adventure, suspense movies.
