If the guitar-based shoegaze sound of '90s indie acts like Chapterhouse and Slowdive had their electronic equivalent, it might as well be Germany's Ulrich Schnauss. On his third album, GOODBYE, Schnauss reimagines the shimmering, melodic textures of dreampop as blissed-out synthetic symphonies. Favoring either subtle beats or a metronomic pulse as the backdrop for his ethereal compositions, Schnauss builds up a wistful, starkly beautiful soundscape daubed in washes of hazy reverb effects. Adding subtle layer upon subtle layer to achieve a sonic cohesiveness, GOODBYE is imbued with a warmth and emotional resonance that's rarely found in electronic music.
