Modest Mouse broke out with little fanfare in 2004. A few radio stations played a catchy, upbeat song called 'Float On' while the song gained airplay. Suddenly, it was everywhere and Modest Mouse hit the big time. 'Float On' became the summer's anthem and cemented MM's place as a band to watch.
As amazing as 'Float On' is, it's not even the best song on the album. The album's opening salvo 'The World at Large' is as dreamy and heavenly as anything you'll hear. Even the offbeat latter half of the album is entertaining and won't have you hitting the Forward button on your CD player.
I'm anxious for their next album - I'll be impressed even if it's a fraction of the greatness of their major label debut.
Although people who desire indie cred are often harsh on this album, I suspect that they are only like that because this album had a top 40 song on it. In fact, this is a solid Modest Mouse release. The single "Float On" is about as good as pop music gets, with clever and catchy rhythm guitar chord progressions, a sweet lead guitar melody, and meaningful lyrics. "Bury Me With It" is a great example of Modest Mouse rocking out, and "Dance Hall" highlights the band's bluegrass tendencies. If you are a fan of MM's lengthy, jam-style, 11-minute songs that have been on other albums, then this album might not be for you. It is much more poppy and concise, but still a great album overall.
not that i'm a huge fan of modest mouse to begin with, but this cd wasn't all that i was hoping it would be. the sound is pretty much the same throughout the cd with the exception of a few really good songs. other than that... don't waste your money buying it new. go to a used cd store or borrow it from a friend!
Modest Mouse has always been cutting edge but always very listenable. GNFPWLBN finds them at their peak! The horn intro immediately makes you realize that this one is just a little different. Every song flows with great instrumentalization and biting lyrics. If you are into Modest Mouse or want to hear them at their peak, then this one is for you. You will not be disappointed.
GNFPWLBN is by far my favorite and most played MM CD. There's not a bad track on the album and even the experimental songs are catchy and easy to listen to. The anger and frustration still sits at the front but somehow it seems more subtle and polished. For those of you looking to buy your first MM CD this is probably the best place to start. 5 Huge Stars.
This was my first Modest Mouse cd. Since I got this one; I have all most got everyone. Still need some of the older stuff, but almost there. On this cd Float on is the best song. If you liked any of the other Modest Mouse cds you will love this one, too.
