Pyros maniac Perry Farrell has always favored his creative instincts over the quick buck. His first band, Jane's Addiction, mixed punk, funk and classic-rock riffs at a time when rock was ruled by hair bands; Porno For Pyros entered the alt-rock sweepstakes by touring on a stage that looked like a circus sideshow and refusing to play Jane's Addiction songs. GOOD GOD'S URGE, the second Porno album, finds Farrell on a more metaphysical tip--inspired, apparently, by frequent surfing trips to the South Seas (he alludes to them in "Tahitian Moon" and "Bali Eyes"). It's a radically different album than PORNO FOR PYROS.
Bassist Martyn LeNoble quit the band midway through the recording of GOOD GOD'S URGE, and was replaced by ex-Minutemen/Firehose bassist Mike Watt. That's Watt on the surreal "100 Ways," a song that sounds like the result of a Spanish bullfighter discovering Eastern mysticism. The British band Love And Rockets provides the backing on dreamy opening cut, "Porpoise Head." Some tunes, such as "Dogs Rule The Night," actually cleave close to the old Jane's sound; others show a continuing drive to explore. "Wishing Well" is a swirling mass in the middle of which a clarinet plays a klezmer-like break.

Editorial Reviews
3 Stars (out of 5) - ...the highlight of GOOD GOD'S URGE is the searing title song, which is split into two moods that make alternate pleas for compassion and fury....Well put and idiosyncratic...
Rolling Stone (06/13/1996)

6 (out of 10) - ...There's little in the way of a 'we' here; all curiosity seems directed inward, to places no Lollapalooza laminate can get you. Much of GOOD GOD'S URGE was inspired by surfing trips to the Pacific Islands, and like any surf believer Farrell knows his only true kinship is with the waves...
Spin (07/01/1996)

...an up-to-date counterpart to the music Syd Barrett made after leaving Pink Floyd. It is weird, candid and minimal. Moments of nonsense and endearing simplicity are mixed with revelations best interpreted by a team of psychoanalysts....an honest testament to flawed eccentricity.
New York Times (06/02/1996)

...these cocoon symphonies are strange and disturbing things....Perhaps the biggest mistake you could make with Good God's Urge is to try to understand it....Far better to abandon logic and let it wash over you...
Melody Maker (05/25/1996)

8 (out of 10) - ...[Perry Farrell] has subjugated his ego to the ecosystem....GOOD GOD'S URGE is one long hymn to the greater forces...[that] evoke[s] colours and smells and feelings, a sensory feast....Perry Farrell is extraordinary...
NME (05/25/1996)

5 (out of 5) - ...GOOD GOD's URGE is too far out there--ahead of it's time with a little borrowed from the mushroom-era of the '60s (War, not Sonny & Cher). Good God-dess!...
RIP (07/01/1996)

...Tunes confidently blend weird improvisation with gorgeous melody, giving the album both depth and beauty...
