The Golden Compass (DVD, 2008, Full Frame)

Here we have tangible evidence we should not let any special interest dictate what we should or should not watch. This film is a delight for children and adults as well. I shudder to think there are people out there who would find anything offensive with this film as it is overflowing with heartwarming attributes.
The visuals are astounding. The storyline is original, highly controversial (or at least in the mind of some religious groups). Maybe even more amazing to me than how good this film is, is the high volume of criticism and low ratings I have seen. It might be a case of not appreciating the complexity of the story. You can't just jump into this film and immediately know what's going on. You have to exert a little effort & brain power to work your way into this alternate universe before settling down for the ride.
I'm certain that the biggest body of complaints come from Christian factions that don't like their belief system challenged in any form. The portrayal of an evil ruling body known as the Magisterium may hit a little too close to home for some Catholics. Some may be bothered by seeing every human accompanied by what appears to be an animal familiarly referred to as a daemon* (no it's not a demon, think of the Hellenistic concept of the daemonic). *These animals are part of the individual. In this imaginary world the soul is separated from the body and exists as a companion creature that accompanies the individual throughout life.
It is a Good Movie for all ages to enjoy....so enjoy!!!

The storyline is so complicated that it was hard to sit through the film.

It is confusing and a viewer should have been told that reading the book is necessary before viewing the film! The film doesn't explain what is going on very well.

The CGI has good effects, the actors are basically well cast, the voice actors for the CGI animals are fantastic.... but the storyline lacks cohesiveness!

Not recommended for mainstream viewing. Not recommended for small children...

I had heard a lot of hype about this movie when it first came out and purchased the DVD (cheaper than seeing the movie). I am a Christian, so was a bit reluctant to watch another Christian bashing movie, but I honestly did not see that. What I did see was a criticism of authoritarian governments, aiken to Gallileo being tried for heresy.
As for the witchcraft and magic, it was on a par with Harry Potter.
There were some good scenes, but it was your typical prequel movie, where you are strung along waitng for a final tie up and only end up with what amounts to a commercial within the movie to come watch the next movie, which was very disapointing and somewhat of a rip off.
The air scenes and use of glowing power source in the carriages verses the use of horses was very interesting and there were a few scenes that were captivating, but I was left with a feeling of being hung out to dry in damp weather.
Good for older kids perhaps, but probably not younger ones.

Decided to buy it because I enjoy fantasy & magical movies, however, this was a disappointment. It was built up as being so great and fantastic, it's no where near some of the movies before it. The animal effects were great, but the story line is weak, I lost interest after the first 20 minutes. As for it being a treat to God and religion as we have heard it to be, there is not a thing to be concerned about. This movie can never top "MOSES", the story of Moses was extraordinary in drama, special effects and love. The Golden Compass could never compare. Not worth the money or time. Forget about this one.

I bought this movie, already seeing it once before and I fell in love with it. The acting and concept of the whole movie is brilliant.

This is movies is exciting and full of unexpected turns. the film is very interesting and introduces concepts of the possibility of other worlds. The enjoyment of seeing a young female with the knowledge and strength to do what most adults don't believe a young female can. This film is a must see.

This movie was/is wonderful and great to see. I have looked at it and found who it moved me to be very happy about the movie it self. I simply loved it and I was very happy to see and know how we as people see more clearly. I again say....Just love it, totally.

It worked great and got here very fast! Loved it! I had never seen the movie before but i had heard that it was good. it was lovely. i loved the books and am very happy that i now have the movie!

i bouth this dvd for kids and they love it. i recommended to avery one to have it this dvd.this is exelent for kids and adult.

I had assumed that a picture with Daniel Craig would be good - but I was dissapointed.
Maybe kids would enjoy it more -
At least the special effects were good.

Excellent movie for all ages. Adventure and suspense, not to give up the ending...but the good guy prevails!

I had watched this movie before and wanted it as part of my collection. I went on ebay and found it. I bought it at a good value, the seller shipped it quickly and had good correspondance. I have received this used DVD movie in a timely manner. It plays as reported in the ad write-up. I am very pleased. I would buy from this seller in the future.

Love this movie. I get NetFlix and watch about 3 movies a week on average. I never buy movies, but I had to have this one..it is one you can watch over and over again. Once I saw it I had to have it. This movie is incredible! The graphics and special effects in this movie are breath taking.

I loved it because I read his trilogy "His Dark Materials" which includes "The Golden Compass", "The Subtle Knife" and "The Amber Spyglass". Had I not read the books I don't know if I would've liked it as much. I just hope they make the remaining 2 movies of the trilogy.

Great family movie. Our children are 2,6, and 16, and we all enjoyed it. something in the movie for everyone to enjoy!

Okay or average movie. Had a good plot, very sci-fi, but the ending was just to set up the next movie.

Great clean movie that the whole family can enjoy. They say there is a hidden anti God message but I did not see it. There are some things, but you really have to think out of the box to see what every one is complaining about. I would recommend to everyone I know.

Very Stupid movie very boring did not like at all! No excitment at all in it. If you like dull slow movies you will kike this one then!
