Movie Description
The GOLD OF NAPLES presents director Vittorio De Sica's second foray into an anthology of short vignettes. Based on the short stories of Giuseppe Morotta, each vignette is headed by a major Italian star. In "The Racketeer," famed mime Toto plays a henpecked husband searching for the courage to throw his abusive and unwelcome mobster guest out of his home. "Pizza on Credit" stars young Sophia Loren as a wife who loses her wedding ring during a passionate adulterous fling. De Sica stars as a poor elderly Count in "The Gambler," whose addiction to gaming carries him to gamble with the son of his doorman. In "Theresa," Silva Mangano plays a prostitute whose marriage is on the rocks because her young husband is mentally unstable. Each of the stories offers excellent stylized acting, often closer to silent film work or theater than standard cinema. The end result is four comic and entertaining tales set in the often beautiful buildings and streets of Naples.
