This was one of the first few Pratchett's I read and I got into it because of the combination of fantasy, humor and serious theme. Think if I had read some of the earlier ones first -- more slapstick, less sharp satire of recognizable aspects of modern life -- wouldn't have got into his work so much. The cast of characters isn't as delightfully eccentric as in some of his books, but as someone who loves books, very easy to be drawn into the mystery of the Library and livingness of messages. And plenty of funny enough characters if you're not used to Pratchett.

  Pratchett has done better.

I bought this book because it was by Terry Pratchett. I love and adore his work and would join the Night Watch in a minute if it were an option. That being said, Going Postal isn't one of his best. It starts out really well and has lots of neat characters and nice bits of pathos here and there, but it's rather slow over-all and it needed to be longer to flesh out some of the secondary plots or shorter to exclude them all-together. If you love Pratchett like I love Pratchett then it's a must read simply for the sake of reading, but if you're only a fan of certain Discworld characters or you're just getting into his works then steer clear of this one.
