Be a mobster, claw your way to the top and take control of New York.

Quick review:

An excellent buy. Indepth story, excellent graphics, great game play and enough missions to keep you busy for a long time. Fans of "The Godfather" movie won't be disappointed, the game is faithful to the original story. Fans of GTA will enjoy the familiar feel of the game.

Want more info?

You become an unofficial enforcer and work you're way up the ranks. The final goal is to take control New York. Along the way, you must deal with rival families, the police, and the FBI.

The extensive map allows you to explore all of New York from the beginning. You can work toward taking control a section at a time (Little Italy, Hell's Kitchen, ect), or take a little bit of every area.

Helpful mobsters give you tips on bribing the police, hijacking trucks, and methods to use. The senior members of the Family will give you missions as your respect level grows.

Some of the graphics are repeated over and over (flower shop, bakery, hotels, cars), but the city is excellently rendered. You can easily get lost or wind up turning the wrong corner and being ambushed on a dead end street if you don't make use of your map.

While the grame draws on the themes of the Grand Theft Auto games (random violence, steal cars, run over people) it is not a copy. The elements it borrows from the game add to the over all game play.

This game is an excellent buy with weeks of game play no matter how good you are at video games.

  A LITTLE OVERATED!

What you do in the game

In this game you design your own character at the start and play through the game as him, even though your character wasn't in the movie you still play major parts from it.

Note: You really need to have seen the film to understand the game.

Graphics The graphics in this game are really good (not including cutscenes as the graphics are usually good on them) life-like people walk the streets and each individual person even has their own name. Weapons also have good graphics. Main characters in the game have extra, detailed features and look even better than civillians. Each city has good graphics like the buildings etc. Though shops are heavily recycled. You will get used to it. The cars graphics aren't really good as you can't see through the windows. They have a cartoonish look to them. The cars are the thing in the game that stopped me giving the graphics 10 points in this review.

Gameplay

The gameplay is quite good, though not the best, the best thing is extorting shopkeepers and forcing them to give you protection money, thats if they don't give you it when you ask them nicely at the start, Sometimes you can push shopkeepers past their limit when extorting them and they will fight back hard. The freestyle fighting is cool at the start but gets boring when you have played the game long enough. The special gun moves are the same with the freestyle fighting, fun at the start then boring. Also the game is to easy, there isn't really a hard mission in the game. The cars are also a major problem, they actually are like a 1940's car, too slow can't turn properly etc. br />

Note: To change your characters clothes you have to gain money save the game, load it and then select ' Go to the tailor shop' .

Other comments

The game is compaired to GTA, but that isn't really true, the only thing the games have in common is the map at the bottom right of the screen and the fact the the triangle button gets you in a car. I bought the game for £29.99 which is about $49.99, $59..99 in the US , I'm not sure bu It's not worth that, I think it's only worth about £20.00 which it is at a games shop near me at the moment. This game definetly isn't for everyone, I mean I love free roaming, random killing games but this game didn't give me a thrill, so you should definetly rent it first. But, I suppose it's still a good game for some.

Grand Theft Auto Meets 1930-1940's America

Do you like Grand Theft Auto? Do you like The Godfather?

Fan of the 1920's through the 1950's?

Then you will most likely enjoy this game. Its a great mixture and a great blend of Grand Theft Auto style mechanics, graphics, game-play, and the view and grandeur of the 1920's through the 1950s, with a Godfather-esque look and feel to everything.

I'd easily rank this in the Top 25 of the last couple of years of the PS2.

  Cool Mob Game
Review created: 01/11/07(updated 01/12/07)

I thought this was going to be another game that ripped off Grand Theft Auto when I bought this game. It does a little, but only a little. This game, though, adds so much more. It has all the cool things from the Godfather Trilogy whether it's carrying out a hit on a rival family, paying bribes to G-Men and cops, or influencing store and hotel owners that they need your protection for a fee. You can go along with what the agenda is or you can go and try to obtain more businesses and racketeering ventures. And what's really cool about the game is that for each time you kill a member of a rival family, they keep a vendetta out on you. If you kill too many members of the same family, then a mob war starts. The only way to end the mob war (and win anyway) is to bribe a G-Men or bomb a rival business within 48 hours (time goes by rather quickly though, it's not really 48 real hours, more like 48 minutes if even that). The only gripe I had was the controls are a little goofy to get used to for a newbie when you're fighting (it kind of reminds me of Fight Night, the boxing video game). But I got used to it, and now it's no big deal at all.

Dollar for dollar, there aren't too many games that are as good as The Godfather. The storyline is exceptional, and there are so many things to do. It even lets you create yourself as a crime thug (I'm a longhaired hippie and it won't let me have long hair-minor bummer) and you work yourself up the family ladder. I bought 24: The Game and thought that game was pretty good, but that almost stinks when compared to this game. I liked the storyline on 24, but the options and gameplay on The Godfather are much much better, it's just way more fun (sometimes too fun, real time hours go by too fast when you play this game, warning to significant others). I reviewed 24 a couple months ago and now I wish I hadn't given it such a good review after playing this game. If you're a fan of the Godfather Trilogy, you'll absolutely love this game. If you're not familiar with the series (I would say "If you're not a fan", but that would be absurd. I mean if you're reading this, you can't dislike the movies unless you just dislike Godfather 3), you'll get to be a character in the movie but in game form. Parents should be cautioned with this game. It's violent and the language might not suit young ears. Otherwise, I know you'll love this game. It's unique gameplay and storyline will give you hours and hours of enjoyment.

  Godfather remains true to movie!

As a huge Godfather film lover, I was skeptical about purchasing the game. EA did an excellent job in intertwining a new plot into the old classic storyline without missing a beat. All the important aspects were carefully played out, while the unimportant were purposefully left out to perfection. After many hours climbing to the top of the Corleone family and eventually becoming the Don of NYC, I'm only wondering when and if we're going to see Godfather II make it to my gaming system!

At first the game seemed very easy and one dimensional. After 8 hours straight of playing this game I knew it was something special. You create yourself and work your way up to being a made man and even becoming the boss of nyc. Many diffrent side missons and weapons to upgrade and choose from plus difficulty you will be playing this for days. It is a game that is addicting and hard to pull yourself away from. Only downside is sometimes the missions seem the same such as the insides of a few buildings were the same but the gameplay will make you look past this. I will have to give this a 4/5. If there was a 4.5 out of 5 i would have given it that.

I bought the video game for my grandson. The game played good and my gradson liked it. I didn't care for it, because it was very vulgar, so we had to take it away from him. It would be ok for someone over 20 years of age and if they are into ruff stuff.

  BEST PS2 GAME EVER

I had always been interested in getting this game, but at 40-50 dollars, it was not in my budget. Then I saw it for sale on EBAY. This game is awesome. The game allows for you to decide what YOU want to do, where YOU want to go. The graphics are great, gameplay and controls are great. The audio is awesome, with scenes from the movie as well as actual audio used in the game! I highly reccomend this game if you like games like GTA: San Andreas, or if you like the movie.

If you are buying this game because you love the movie and want a taste of being part of the mob, then you won't be disappointed, but if you had played tons of RPG, then you won't be too impressed. The game was pretty predicatable and even when you aren't that good (like me) you will be able to get through it with just a slight effort. Follow the clues, talk to plenty of people, kill the enemies, and you begin to climb through the ranks. Make sure that you buy plenty of hideouts and you'd be able to save and load all the time. OR get killed, wake up in a clinic and you carry on with a slight decrease in cash (medical fees). So, you don't even need a guide, just be persistant.

What I like about the game is how it puts you in the movie and make you part of the scenes as they unfold. Being from New York, I also like seeing how different New York looked back in the 1920's. I bought the game because I liked the movie and I thought it should be a pretty good game.

I love this game. It's set up a lot like GTA and while the playing area is large, it is not as enormous as San Andreas. Which means that if you get bored with something you are doing, you don't have to drive 20 minutes to a new location. The story line is great, which is no suprise since 90% of the game is taken directly from the movie.

The controls are easy to use and feature some fun new moves (new to me anyway) like choking your victim to death. I found this useful because once you got them in the choke hold, they didn't fight back. Just watch out for the guy behind him with the baseball bat.

A great game for anyone that loves the movies and wants to get on the action.

The Godfather is a solid game. I would say that if you can get this game for around $20 then go for it. Anything higher than that and I'm not sure you'll get the replay value out of it that other games can offer. The environments and feel of the game is great, but there seems to be a total of 10 different building layouts in this NYC and the missions often have you drive 10 minutes just to be told you need to drive somewhere else that takes 10 minutes. Targetting can be aggravating when the heat is on and the AI seems to have psychic abilities at times when you enter their rackets.

Bottom line: The action and story is great. For the first 10 hours you won't be able to put the game down. But a lack of variety of missions and a few play mechanic issues will get under your skin.

I bought The Godfather: The Game off of eBay and I couldn't wait to see what it had in store. I had heard it was a good game so I thought why not get it?

When I first started playing it, it seemed like a really good game and it really is. Just like the Grand Theft Auto games, you can carjack people, shoot and kill people with a variety of weapons ranging from a baseball bat to a tommy gun and go on missions given to you by different characters. Unlike GTA, you have to extort businesses, buy out rackets, destroy rival family compounds and seize all warehouses and hubs. Doing these will give you the title of 'Don of New York City.'

People reading this might be confused about the Don of NYC part. You see, in this game, you start off as an Outsider for the Corleone family. Doing missions and gaining respect will eventually promote you to an Associate and so on and so forth. There are 7 ranks in this game: Outsider, Associate, Soldier, Capo, Underboss, Don and Don of NYC.

The game has characters from the original movie like Vito Corleone, Michael, Sonny, Freddie, Tessio, Clemenza, etc. In fact, some of the characters are even voiced by the actors who portrayed them in the original movie. Marlon Brando, before his death, recorded the dialogue to reprise his character Vito Corleone. James Caan also provided the voice for Sonny Corleone. But Al Pacino is absent from this game. For some reason, he refused to provide the voice for his famous character, Michael Corleone.

Famous events that happened in the movie (Luca Brasi's murder, Paulie Gato's murder, etc.) are featured in the game and are beautifully done, I should say. The graphics and sound quality on this game are fantastic.

The only problem I have with this game is that it's a bit too short. Excluding the prelude (which is like the tutorial), there are only 17 missions you have to complete. However, there are side missions you must complete to become Don of NYC, like hit contracts, bombing rival family warehouses, etc. I've made the title of Don of NYC in just over 24 hours, which is pretty short for a game.

But overall, I do recommend this game. In my opinion, the Grand Theft Auto games are better but I still enjoyed playing The Godfather, nevertheless. 4/5 overall.

All though the Godfather is probably my favorite movie of all time, this game has something for everyone. Or put it this way, if you like any of the GTA games you should like this. You start your way up from a nobody to become the Boss of all 5 families. Along the way you have to takeover compounds, docks rackets, and get your respect up. Doing all of these helps you get a higher respect rating so you can add attributes to your player. You also gain money as well so you can upgrade your weapons. All of the cast is along from the movie except Al Pacino would not allow them to use a likeness of him, so the Michael player looks similar but not like Pacino and does not sound like him either. Tom Hagen,Sonny Coreleone,CLemenza,Tessio and of course the Godfather are all here in this action packed game. The only downside I had with the game was when I finished it. Worth every penny. A+++

I enjoyed the quality of the game and the fast delivery. I would recommend this game to those who like this kind of drama and action. I guess the most wonderful thing about buying on e-Bay is I know I can trust this method of shopping. When I need anything I shop e-Bay first. And I know that I will keep shopping for a long time.

  The Godfather is a Legend
Review created: 08/13/09

I loved the Grand Theft Auto series. I loved the incredible freedom, and even though you aren't given the incredible freedom in the Godfather as you are in GTA, in my opinion it still puts GTA to shame. The graphics are unbelievably good for a PS2, character creation is amazing, gameplay is very addicting. All in all, love it.
