Though it didn't reveal much information I didn't already know and I could have stood for it to go into a bit more detail on some points (like the history of Christian dates/holidays and the crazy records of church fathers like Justin Martyr, who once saw a real 'headless horseman' on a mission to Africa according to his writings), it was a nice visual confirmation to alot of things that alot of people already believe or suspect about Christianity as a hoax. Was it a bit abrasive at times? A bit unfair or unprofessional? Overly loud or inappropriate musical score? Sure, but not nearly as bad some some first-time filmmakers have done. Overall I'd say it's a good conversation starter and nonbelievers should pass this on to friends who do believe once they are done with the DVD and talk about it afterwards. It's not enough to shatter anyone's faith but it will at least open the gates of real discussion back and forth, which is the real impetus for change in our society. I for one want to see religion subside in favor of philosophy or at least see Christianity modernize in sort of John Shelby Spong sort of way and discard the fake supernatural elements and let Jesus of Nazareth at least take his rightful place among the philosophers. Confuscious once told his followers specifically not to worship him because he was a man, yet Confuscianists certainly have done so. I think an equal travesty occurs in Christianity as a religion and this perhaps is the ultimate disgrace to the Jesus figure. As Mark Twain once said, if Jesus ever returned then the last thing he'd ever be is a Christian. Hope this is useful.

Raising questions and thoughts on why we believe in anything is part and parcel of being human. Without it, we would still be in clod dark caves. This movie raises questions that do just that.

Great movie, just a little too short.

This is a great movie for anyone who is willing to question the origins of Christianity. For a lot of people, whether or not Jesus existed is simply not open for discussion. If you are open-minded enough, it is a great movie that raises very interesting points. It makes a very strong case that Jesus either never existed, or his works and words were exagerated and written just like any other savior-God religion of the time. The themes and events of Jesus' life are almost exactly the same as many other Gods of the time. Christianity is almost definitely a religion that borrowed dogma and stories from all of these other religions when it was forming 2000 years ago. I highly recommend this movie for everyone.

The commentary tracks are also very interesting. They're done in an interview format with Richard Dawkins, The Raving Atheist, and someone else that I can't remember. Definitely worth listening to after watching the movie, not a pass-over like most commentary tracks on DVDs these days.

My only gripe is that it is way too short at just under an hour long. There is a lot more content and evidence that could have easily been added. It's too bad that it wasn't as comprehensive as it could have been.

THE CHURCH DOES NOT WANT YOU TO SEE THIS.

"May our heterosexist, religious & materialistic friends find an open sexuality, a real god and the joys of nature".(Anon).

ABOUT THE DVD:

Get this DVD now ! This and the book "The God Delusion" are brilliant debunkings of the god made in man's image, and how much harm religion has done to humanity and the planet. Most today are opting for Spirituality for it is god-made, as opposed to Religion which is man-made, greedy, hateful & devastatingly harmful. The authors forgot to say that if god causes god-self, the universe could have caused itself, hence no need for god. But "The Tao of Physics" shows the universe is god, albeit not the one we've heard of.

OTHER DVD's OR COMPANION DVD's TO THIS DVD:

The God That Wasn't There (see how religion harms people and the environment).
Stephen Hawkings Universe (big bang and more).
The Unknown Jesus (there were many Jesus's).
The Einstein of Sex (learn about sexual behaviour).
Kinsey (learn about homosexual behaviour, and Plato's good, beauty & truth).
The Power of Myth (careful of Joseph Campbell's heterosexist interpretations).

BOOKS:

Biological Exuberance by Bruce Bahgemihl (heterosexuality not a natural norm).
Jesus and the Shamanic Tradition of Same Sex Love by Will Roscoe.
In Quest of the Hero by Lord Raglan, Rank & Dundes (Jesus myths before Jesus).
David loved Jonathan by Tom Horner (Adam & Steve long before Eve - and more).
The Secret Gospel by Morton Smith (Jesus's male lover/s)
The Christ Myth by Arthur Drews.
The Gnostic Gospels by Elaine Pagels.
Eros and the Mysteries of Love by Julius Evola.
The Man Jesus Loved by Theodore W. Jennings, Jr.
Jacob's Wound : Homoeroticism in Ancient Israel by Theodore W. Jennings, Jr.
The God Delusion by Richard Dawkins (a must - god's hatred & world suffering).
Tao of Physics by Fritjof Capra (if ever a bible of the universe it's this).
From Pre-Socratic Philosophers to Plato(first section of any philosophy book).
Homosexual Behaviour in Animals by Volker Sommer & Paul L. Vasey
A Brief History of Time by Stephen Hawkings

The Da Vinchi Code has some helpful insights, however its heterosexist stance that Jesus was married to Mary Magdalene is quite out of keeping with the homosexual hero stories and homosexual religious masters who have spanned history and prehistory. If anything, Jesus had a male lover, which is well-explained in several of the books above.

SO YOU'RE HOOKED ?

If you want to know more about debunking religion, heterosexism and greed (which serve as handmaidens to each other), or about Homosexuality and how it relates to Spirituality and Plato's 'Good, Beauty & Truth', then read my other Reviews & Guides on these Subjects, and see book list above.

Tidbit: One of the closest similarities to Jesus and the "Youth" is that of Hercules and his male lover, Hylas, with parallels like the river, a cave, nakedness, man lying upon man, wearing a loin cloth, asking the older one for love, etc.

KEY WORDS FOR THE HOMOSEXUAL HEROES & RELIGIOUS MASTERS TRADITION:

Hercules, Orpheus, Appolonius, Hadrian & Antinous, Mithras, Osiris, Dionysus, Buddha, Jesus, Moses, Savior/Saviour Gods, Mystery Schools, Resurrection Myths, Sacred Sex, Carpocrates, Gymno Gymnos, Gnostic Gospels, Mythology, Shamans, Ancient Heroes, Homosexual Heroes, Greek Heroes.

A film that will make athiests feel smug and Christians wonder if athiests have followed their thoughts to a logical conclusion. The film does not answer the greatestest challenge the athiesm: YOU. How did a self-aware being like yourself come into existence from NOTHING?

  Good but not Great

Fleming could have done a lot more research to back up this truth but chose instead to come off like it's all about a personal vendetta over the time he wasted in bible babble school. Lots of us, if not most here in the US, were born into the emptiness of the biblical babbling of dogmatic scourge and intuitively sensed it was B.S. but there is a lot more evidence of this fact than Fleming bothered to research. Comes off as just another pissed off, backslid, bible babbler.

The God Who Wasn't There (2005, DVD)

The God Who Wasn't There was a very interesting DVD which delved into the historical fact that Jesus wasn't a historical figure but was merely a different retelling of Ancient Pagan figures and myths. The main drawback to the DVD was the somewhat limited use of historical experts and scholars which would have only made the argument stronger. I personally believe that Jesus wasn't a historical figure but someone that has a devout faith probably would not have found the argument presented in the DVD as compelling. Altogether I enjoyed the DVD and found it another tool in my own understanding of the reality of the "Jesus cult."

  Something from Nothing

Obviously, self aware beings cannot come from nothing. Except for God. God is self aware, and he can come from nothing. Except he didn't come from nothing. He could have though if he wanted to. He just always was. He can do that. We can't. Bottom line is if self aware human beings exist, God must have made them, and if a self-aware God exists, no cause is required.

This documentary is interesting to watch, but never actually proves or disproves anything. It simply is one mans opinion.

  They were out of stock
Review created: 09/13/09

I was disappointed, since they were out of stock for several weeks. The offered me a chance to cancel, and after a while, I took them up on their offer. The case was handled quite well as far as keeping me up to date and getting me a refund, but I wasted several weeks hoping to get the DVD. I'd hoped that, when someone advertises something, they actually HAVE what they advertise.

  A Must See Documentary!

I loved this film! I highly recommend it to any Christians out there! It shows the facts and evidences that are unwanted and ignored by the Christian religions. The only thing that I didn't like about it was that it wasn't long enough and didn't go into more detail. 4 Stars.
